2007 ION-2 Sedan
Default ion kid friendliness

my sister is not so bright, she is seriously considering getting rid of her 02 grand prix in favor of an ion or cobalt. I know for what I do these are fantastically big little cars, but she has 2 little ones (2 and 8), and may some day have a third, how easy have all of you out there had it with strollers and 2 to 3 kids fitting in an ion?

My kids fit just fine in our ION but they are 9 and 11 and only two kids and no strollers are involved.

My younger son has stained the back of the drivers seat terribly with his dirty shoes in winter. Watch out if it is the light color interior like mine.

Older son yanked the rear high mount stop light cover off accidentally.
("What's this?", *pop*, grrr)

Younger son pulled the rubber piece out of the door handle well and happily chewed on it.

Beware of loose/poorly attached trim.

No drink holders in back is a negative with older kids. I don't know if higher trim level ION's or Cobolts fix this problem.

thanks, cobalts fixed the cup holder problem when they were released I believe, ions have cup holders you can buy that clip into the center console, but they can be removed by curious kids, too. I already know how easily these seats stain, and she will definitely need seat covers and/or blankets.

crystal scan, yes the GP has more trunk space, but it gets bad gas mileage, and has other problems with it, mostly cosmetic. she really likes the big space for a little car concept like I do, and as long as she can do the financing, I actually think this is a smart move for her.

We purchased my wifes '03 Ion 2 when my daughter was 6 months old. Now she is almost 7 and my son is 3. We have packed this thing to the max on more than one occasion for vacations. The light color interior requires a good cleaning every now and then (depending on how messy the kids are), but cleans up well with the upholstery attachment to our carpet cleaner.

As stated, the trunk space could be larger, but works. A "full sized" stroller fits, but takes up most of the room. Once our children were old enough, we just took an umbrella stroller instead.

Other than that, it has been a great family car! 105,000 miles and still going fine....

I'd get a wagon with kids. the ion is way too small with kids and I would get an ion only if that's all I could afford.

MPVs are expensive, she was looking at PT cruisers thinking it was small, so it would get good gas mileage, but she is wrong, 18/24 is not good by any calculation, plus they are expensive and have big blind spots.

the 3.1 does not beat a 2.2 when you're comparing a 3400lb+ car to a 2700lb car.

My 2003 ION-3 has cup holders in the back. So either the ION-2 doesn't have them (rather odd) or Saturn decided to remove them in later models (more leg room?)?

Not sure how easy (or compatible) my ION-3's cup holders are to remove (are these the same "clip into" cup holders mentioned above?) but you might look into adding those if that can be installed... Check with your Saturn Parts department.

I have installed them into my car, they're cheap, and as far as I know, 3s came with them standard and in 1s and 2s they are an option.

Yup, just drained and replaced the fluid (on accident, long story...) after 105K. No problems before but I noticed that it does shift smoother now.

The ION-3 sedan came with rear seat cup holders standard for the years of 2005-2007. Not sure about 03-04 or if the coupe came with them.

I never noticed them in an ION-1-2 on the lot, and wonder if they are customer/dealer installed

I went to the getsaturnparts site and it does look like I could order some rear seat cupholders for my ION for about $14. I just might try that out.

I don't use the ION as a family car much but you should have heard the caterwauling last time we swung through the drive through and they realized there were no cup holders.

Not as clean as I'd like it to be for a picture, but this is what the ION-3 rear seat cup holders look like.
