1997 SC2
Default Gear Shift Knob

My wife needs a gear shift knob for a 97 SC2 with 5 speed. Dealers wants over $80.00 for this item. Is this a normal price? It's not leather so I don't understand why so high, could someone explain?

She really likes her SC2 and wants to keep it for a few more years. I really can not complain because other than normal maintenance it's only cost one alternator and one shift linkage in 90,000 miles.

Anyway back to the original problem, does anybody have a spare shift knob or know of a good place to get one. She would perfer not to go aftermarket if possible.

Thanks Bob

How the heck did she wearout/break the gearshift knob? The "S" series knobs are all identical. Consider a junkyard hunt. With suffcient effort, (watch your forehead!) they just pull right off.

There are also quite a few S-cars being parted out in our Classifieds section. They may not mention the knob specifically, but I bet someone's got one. One of our members is selling several S-parts, including a shifter, on eBay right now; I'll bet he's got a knob.

(Hey, my wife broke the shifter SHAFT [aprx. 1/2" diameter steel] in her pickup. She eats a lot of greens... gotta watch those girls who drive stick...)

I wish I kept my original one. My brother got me an awesome one that perfectly matched the interior of my car (see pic) , and when I went to the dealer to ask how to pull the old one off, they said "put it in SECOND, and pull STRAIGHT OUT" sure enough it popped right off. $80 for a replacement sounds rediculous however. Go to a junkyard, and swap it with some better one!

$80. I saw at least 15 of them at the junkyard yeaterday. A shift knob is one of those free junkyard items.

The majority of the time, with small stuff, they just wave you on by anyway.

That's how my local junkyard is... they have let me have a couple keyless entry's..misc. relays... and a radio knob before. But i wouldn't put it in my pocket and walk away... it would probably be my luck that day that they start checkin you to make sure

the last time i went to the junkyard, i brought a fanny pack with tools in it, and just stuffed random parts in it such as bolts, and other goodies like spark plug wires. too bad the valve covers are too big
