Default Odometer Total Change

I have an 01 SC1. It has 312k + miles on it and that's what the odometer showed until recently. My son borrowed the car for a few days and brought it back but now the odometer shows something like 66k miles? It still goes up as you drive but at a rate around maybe 1/2 or less of what it should. He didn't do anything he knows of or even really noticed. The speedometer still seems right and it still runs good so it's just really annoying as I track every mile, fill-up and repair and now that's all thrown off. Anyone ever experienced anything like this or hear of this happening and know a way to fix it?

As the '00-'02 odometer reading is generated inside the BCM I'd assume the fix is replacing the BCM.

Is there any way to check if it is the BCM before I shell out $100+ on another one?

First thought ... maybe reversed leads 'jump' starting... or excessive road salt
on highway in blizzard.

But, I recall OldNuc seemed to have a lot of experience with odometers.
He removed the large plastic instrument cluster bezel, and got to repair components.
He advised replacing gen2 IPs with gen3, specifically because the gen2
odometers would eventually fail due to lost lubrication on the mechanical gear-drive.

Without the mechanical gear drive, i guess whatever sensor is involved might
be suspect. So, I might try a new cluster from a boneyard, before adopting
what is likely the superior advice offered by Fetch (BCM); BUT find out what
the sensor is which provides the info.

Disconnecting/reconnecting the battery Might reset things. Maybe also phone the Service dept at a Chevy dealer to see if that is a routine issue -- that
might be fixed with a TechII.

I bought a useless cluster from one junkyard for $100, and elsewhere got
2 good ones for $25- each.

I saw some speedometers use EEPROM chips to store millage. In my SL1, if you change the cluster, it still remembers the original millage. So I think something happened to your EEPROM chip so it remembers the wrong millage. I do not think you can recover it easily other than removing it and overwriting it.

Here is an example youtube video.
