2007 ION-2 Sedan
Default Transmission

Hey guys,

So my 92' sl1 transmission is heading out to pasture I think. It has 128k on it and its making a weird sound. When you take off sometimes the transmission will make a fairly high pitched chirp (it does about two or three quick chirps). Its been well maintained, and i don't beat it against the shift points all that often (i do sometimes just so it knows who is boss ). It doesn't have the reverse slam, it just clunks into drive when its kinda cold. It's been doing this for about a year or two and i'm not all that worried about it.

So basically what i'm asking is...

How much does a transmission rebuild kit cost, and where do i obtain one? What parts does the kit come with (if there is such a kit)? I'm just trying to weigh out all of my options (rebuild mine or buy a used one). Rebuilding might be a bit more $$ but i would enjoy the opportunity to have a reason to rip my tranny apart (and to weld that dastardly diff pin).

So if any of you 'dudes' can answer any of my questions, that would be awesome.

Thanks...

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

Saturn doesn't sell a rebuild kit. The closest they have is a complete seal and gasket kit. The hard parts and the clutches are sold individually. The kits is in the $100-$150 range if I'm not mistaken

Never had many concerns with chirp yype sounds. Are you sure it's from the trans and not the engine or belt? does it occur on just initial launch or also during up shifts? does it happen during a hard accel or even light throttle ? As much information as you could give as to type and frequency fof sound would be helpful

What he ^ said. Transmissions usually don't chirp.

Since i have no way of recording and its really hard to describe...

saturn automatic transmissions make a distinct noise when you put them into gear...sounds like a cross between a grinder and a metallic duck...

if you know what sound i'm talking about, take that sound and make it short and slightly higher in pitch...

this sound usually is heard as you are just taking off from a stop (normal throttle). Also, the sound isn't very loud.

May not be trans. Are you able to reproduce it when not moving?
Some of the trans engage sound is from the powertrain torquing you may want to check mounts. I would make absolutely sure before tearing into trans.
