Quote:
Tony Borroz from Autopia: The terms of the deal, which is yet to be finalized, would give Penske the rights to the brand and certain other Saturn assets. GM will continue building the Aura, Vue and Outlook models on a contract basis for two years. After that, Penske is expected to give the deal to someone else.

If that's the case he won't want any Canadian Saturn dealers. The reason being is that Mercedes has the rights to the Smart car in Canada, not Penske.

Penske has already stated that he will not be mixing Smart car sales with the Saturn franchises. That is because he has separate franchise agreements for the distribution of Smart cars in the US already. It was also stated that Penske's agreement does not include the Saturn dealers in Canada, it is US only.

I'm still very skeptical about this being the "Smartest Automotive Move of Decade," when the potential is there for Saturn to sell Korean or Nissan sourced vehicles. Neither of which I would knowingly purchase. I would be more comfortable with the deal if an American engineering and development group was formed to launch a joint venture with foreign automakers. From the looks of it the only thing we're going to have available to us through the Saturn channel are rebadged Japanese/Korean cars. At least GM tried to differentiate the Aura, Vue, and Outlook from their platform mates.

Maybe Penske will put a real engine and RWD in the Sky and make it a Corvette buster. Nah. But maybe he will do something bold and unexpected. That would be cool. I didn't realize how rich he was - this takes real money.

The Sky already is RWD. But forget about that idea, the car costs too much to make and would require massive investments on Penske's end as he would either be forced to purchase the factory that makes the car or pay GM enough for them to cancel their plans to scrap the Sky and Solstice.

Given Opels pending sale to Magna and their ban from selling Opel cars in north america, Penske should be headed over to the NUMMI plant and picking up a version of the Vibe to replace the Astra. At least the pricing would be more in line than the high import tariff Astra.

DANG! I was just thinking that exact thought today actually!

I've been looking at the Astra, but the dealer's really don't want to budge much on price (considering that the car is a 2008, that is curious). As others have posted, the Aura seems to be a much better buy.

Pity, I'd love to hack on an Astra! Any aftermarket turbo kits out there for the Astra?

Consider that it is half way through 2009: What else has happened in the past 95% of the decade? Other than Scion, I can't think of much else that would Trump the Saturn deal. He got national brand recognition, a dealer network and some cars to sell. It'd be hard to figure out the value on that but it wouldn't be easy to do from scratch.

Penske is smart. He now has a national dealership chain that can purchase vehicles from any company and even low cost vehicles from China or India with no unions or goverment to deal with.

They are going to buy vehicles from GM or Fiat. Why not buy vehicles made in China? GM was looking to import vehilces made in China but the UAW and the politicians stopped that. Of course they will have to meet US standards. One day we will see vehicles made in China sold in this country. Penske can even get some $$ from a company like Greely or Tata.

On the radio was a report that the Indian firm Mahindra may import cars soon , and that they were more interested in higher-margin utility vehicles , which (higher-margin utility vehicles) a Russian automaker is also said to be transitioning to. Demand for petroleum is projected to be low for another two years , there's a plan .

Pretty fickle trying to predict the future price of oil. But OPEC thinks $80.00 is what they want.

. . . and Boone predicts $100.00 barrel.

And when heating oil climbs again, those 4 cylinder Korean Samsung cars will look mighty pretty.
