It would run like it was missing. It might chug and sputter like it was flooding and then clear up and run well for awhile and then do it again and so we switched vehicles. The next morning I drove it 5 miles to town. It ran perfectly. While stopped, in gear, foot on the brake, it died. It hasn't fired since. I used an INNOVA 5300LaT scanner and got the DTCs. Unfortunately I am missing the last code (1/10) which would be the cause of this problem. The other nine are P2A01,P0481,P0502,P0128,U0101,P0037,P0562,P0037 again. We had the alternator replaced and the engine coolant temp sensor too. I had pulled the relay for the coolant fan high speed circuit and so I believe that is where the U0101 code came from. Today, I removed the three torx head fasteners that holds the ignition control module. With the ignition switch on, I used a test light but I did not find any power to any of the terminals. I pulled the big fuses out and they tested ok. Every fuse that I have looked at appears to be good also. I am totally clueless as to where to go from here. All help is appreciated.

A search within these forums should show wiring diagrams for the ignition control module. Google should have wiring pinouts, voltage and signals for 2.2L ICMs since 2.2L engines are used in several GM models. When ignition is ON, engine off, power should be on one pin of the ICM connector (12V). A test light with ground clipped to bare metal on the engine is a good basic voltage test for 12v (test on battery positive to ensure ground connection of the test light is correct). It would be unusual if power doesn't turn on your test light when probing wiring terminals to the icm.
Beware that ICMs tend to fail compared to ignition coil packs. Threads for 2.2L engines shows this recurring. Perhaps sitting over a hot engine bakes ICMs thru several hundred cold/hot/cold cycles. To make matters a bit complicated when troubleshooting this problem, fuel and spark are needed to make engines run. Presuming fuel is under pressure and available to injectors, injectors are commanded to pulse by the ecm. Spark is commanded by the ecm too as well as turn on the fuel pump. One particular problem that can elude anyone unfamiliar with EFI systems is when the crank position sensor fails, intermittently or outright - effectively rendering the ecm nothing more than a doorstop since the crank sensor sends precise timing signals to the ecm to allow it to operate the entire EFI system. A dead or intermittent crank sensor = no EFI system, no engine run. Two tests can determine a failed crank sensor; zero spark when coil pack and spark plugs are laid out over the engine, connected to wiring with plug bases wired to engine ground for observation while starting the engine and zero injector operation by examining for lack of fuel on spark plugs. After several starting attempts of the engine turning over but never firing up, a flooded engine with raw fuel on spark plugs should be obvious when they're removed. Those error codes are all over the place with no rhyme or reason. Maybe poor electrical grounds(?); battery to chassis, chassis to engine block. Error codes will reset when the engine runs correctly whether manually resetting (reader button reset or battery negative disconnect) or when the engine runs again. Any remaining error codes will reappear as true faults. Last edited by fdryer; 12-19-2022 at 06:35 PM. |

Thank you for your advise. I will Check the ground wire connections first. Then I will pull the coil packs out and check for spark. We are only going to be having high temps in the single digits this week. Also 5 to 8 inches of snow and one day of possibly high winds. I might not be able to do anything with or to it until much later.
