I have an 05 ion…3? I’d have to double check again.
It’s a 2.2, 5 speed quad coupe. I’m not looking to build a “racer” I’m simply looking to build an engine. Being that it’s a standard, are there many hurdles to swap into a 2.0? Or if you help with knowledge of building a boosted 2.2 I don’t know the technical differences. Smaller bore, same stroke? I can definitely Google it. I’m hoping the repair manual has some specs. A boosted motor is simply for me, and I’m not set on it. I picked this car up before the pandemic for $800. It’s in awesome shape. 209k on the clock and runs like a top. I may have access to an engine, and was considering rebuilding it to be put in when the original goes. |

Your best bet may be to look around for some Ecotech forums. I'm sure there's plenty of info out there, it's just a matter of connecting to the right groups.

I think all Ipn 3's are 2.4, but could be wrong.
Yes, fairly substantial hurdles yo swapping in a 2.0 LSJ. It uses a completely different computer, it uses cam position sensors, the crank position system is completely different, uses coil on plug, etc. You'd have to swap the entire engine harness and even then you have clearance issues with the oil cooler and it uses a different clutch. It's possible, but extremely difficult. As far as dimensional differences, it has the same bore as the 2.2, shorter stroke. If you want to go the forced induction route on your car your only option is to use a standalone ECU, there is no tuning support available for the pre 2007 2.2 L61 engine. There are also no other worthwhile power modifications to be made unless 10-15 horsepower at most at substantial cost makes a difference to you. So if you want power, the only realistic option is forced induction and a standalone. Not the end of the world, not the hardest thing ever, but it will cost you some money and require some knowledge. It's very rare that anyone does it. Your best bet is going be to either stick to handling modifications or sell the car and preferably buy an Ion Redline or at least a 2007 2.2 or 2006-2007 2.4 that has tuning support. |
