Default Aftermarket radios?

I Finally decided to replace my old 97' cassette player with something more modern.

I was looking at this unit right here:

https://www.ebay.com/p/Kenwood-DPX50...6665117&chn=ps

From what i've heard some of these after market radios can cause issues with these older cars, Does anyone have any suggestion so there wont be any complications later down the road?

I can't comment on that stereo, but eight months in, no problem with a Pioneer MVH-X690BS. I love it, with one caveat that I was able to fix.

You don't say what you want from a stereo, but with this stereo I have bluetooth and hands free calling and texting. I do not have a cd player with this, but I haven't had need to play a cd for many years, just using my phone for music, so no big deal. I also prefer a double din as I feel the single din stereos try to put too much functionality within a usually smaller control.

I don't know how fussy you are, but I do like the ability to change the light colors -mine is currently blue to match the other lights but you can set it to other colors if you like anyway. I figure if the car gives up, the stereo will stay with me and be put into another car.

So the caveat: the only downside I've had with stereo (and I fear it's similar for others) is the lack of tactile feel on buttons which I really dislike and consider a safety issue. I really don't want to have to look at a stereo to make sure I'm pushing the right button thanks, but I fixed this by buying some small adhesive black buttons that I've stuck on. Much better -and safer, my eyes are on the road at all times! This may be negated if you wish to incorporate a steering wheel control admittedly (I don't have steering wheel controls, plus the adapter for this is usually another $50-$100).

One last thing: I did buy from Crutchfield, and found it competitively priced -they also included all the mounting hardware for $110. One of the best things I've ever done to my car.

If you do end up going with that radio, make sure to take some pics and post the on the forms here
I've never seen what a double din radio looks like in a gen 2 Saturn and I'm kinda curious what the fit is like. I remember reading a while back that a double din radio wouldn't fin in gen 2 Saturns (they defiantly do though) so I don't think many people have actually done it. I would try myself but I like my cassette + eq radio way to much and no could ever take it from me, lol.

That should be top notch. I had a double DIN in an S series looks and fits great. Moved it to my Camry, when I sold my Camry I moved it to my Highlander. Funny thing the opening on the Highlander is slightly wider so the install kit includes 2 "fillers" that go on the sides. Can't see them unless you know though

You're on the right track, double DIN's look best on the 95-02 Saturn's. The single DIN dash kits give you a useless pocket above the radio. You can't actually store anything without it falling out while driving.

I just installed a Pioneer double in a 95 Saturn for my nephew. This one was $75 on Amazon. You may have to replace the four 6.5" speakers as well, you'll find that they like to blow out after a new stereo throws more power at them.

OP, I have that same exact radio in my Chevy Blazer. I love it! It's a sexy radio with a lot of different lighting settings. Also puts the names of the stations and things. I have a single-din in my Saturn also a Kenwood radio. But that double din that is in my blazer, oh my. I want it in my Saturn. Kenwood is excellent. Unrelated, I do web work for Kenwood radio. I can speak highly of the company in general and I love the car radio products.

On my '98, I had to drive pretty aggressively for anything to fall out. It was slanted slightly downward towards the front; rarely had anything sliding out.

On my '02. the pocket is below the radio. It's flat, so everything slid out. Fixed that by buying a $1 no-slip, black, rubber shelf-liner at the dollar store, cut out an appropriate size piece, and slid it in there. Have not had anything slip out yet. (been in there since Feb/March of this year

My notepad (for tracking mileage and maintenance/repairs), pencil, and garage door opener stay put now, even with brisk acceleration

This is a cheap XD-103, under $20 from Walmart/Amazon. Mechless, usses SD card (shown) or USB stick. Good enough for the commuted
(I reviewed it elsewhere on the forum, has several shortfalls). XD107 with bluetooth is about the same price, $17 or so

I can't comment on that particular stereo, but I think the double DIN is a good choice. As others have stated, the pocket that comes with the mounting kit for the single DINs is pretty useless. It'll hold the remote that may come with the new stereo, but that's about it. The double DIN stereos have larger buttons and a larger display...it makes a big difference. And Kenwood is a good, well known brand so it should sound nice.

As Macgyver suggested, replacing all the 6.5" speakers would be a big help. All the factory speakers I've had in my Saturns didn't sound that great with the aftermarket stereos I installed. Replacing the speakers really helped...how much it helps depends on the speakers you buy

It seems like pretty much everyone doesn't like the pocket that comes with single din after market radios but some of the factory radios came with a pocket too and I never had a problem using it. Was the pocket that came with the factory radio better for some reason?

I love my aftermarket pockets. I track my mileage and maintenance on a notepad (shown in the pic) and it's easier to grab it out of the pocket than the glovebox.

Nonstick shelf liner for $1 solved any problem with stuff sliding out, and I have enough left over to do about 20 more cars

(no kidding - I cut a square out for the Saturn pocket, a square for both minivans to keep the weighted, "non slip" GPS mount from sliding on the dash, and still have most of the roll left. Also lined my steel toolbox drawers. )

It is a good price for the specs.

It has a standard 50x4 internal amp, so I recommend aftermarket speakers. It has 22x4 RMS power(this is average or continual power level it runs at most of the time).

This radio will toast your factory paper speakers, FAST!!!

With the frequency range, 3-way speakers will get you by, but it you want some excellent sounding 4-ways and a good price, take a look at what i installed:

I actually wanted to keep my little pocket, so when I replaced my first aftermarket Clarion Receiver and original speakers, I went with a fairly basic Kenwood KDC-X502 and their 3-way speakers.

I create my own CD/MP3's so my need was to have a good disk player, more than a radio, so I went with a single din Kenwood with decent speakers. I am quite happy with the output too.

So it appears that the 2002 SL doesn't have the same F5 issue but rather it's an A2 issue (same thing?)

Some conflicting statements from what I've read. Some say the 2000-2002 s series don't have to worry about the electrical issues that affect the earlier models. GM fixed this issue in gen 3? Some say it's exactly the same just a different spot.

I'm wondering if my aftermarket stereo with 4 new speakers will cause me issues?

This is the stereo

crutchfield.ca/p_105KWX830B/JVC-KW-X830BTS.html

It has a max 10 amp current consumption. It has a 1.5 amp USB charger.
Internal amp is 50W x 4 max power output.

These are the speakers

crutchfield.ca/p_575R165X3/Rockford-Fosgate-R165X3.html?skipvs=T

they are 4 ohm so they will draw more current.

From what I've seen this should be a fairly simple install. If I get all the proper adapters and kits and stuff.

The only thing I'm worried about is this F5/A2 issue you guys all talk about. I have a 2002 SL1 with no options except AC. That means no power locks, no power windows, no sunroof. Some people say I should be fine and some don't think so. What do you guys think? Do you need to run a separate power source for any kind of aftermarket stereo or can you get away with just using the provided connector adapters?

Installed a decent, hand me down Alpine head unit in my '02 Saturn, ended up using existing wiring and speakers without any issues. I will say that the USB charging port in radio seems to charge phones slowly, but huge improvement over chargers I've plugged into the 12V port (which caused tons of static when radio was on). Don't know if separate power source would change charging rate, but doubt it.

I would run a separate fused power source just to be safe.

there's a guide or two written by adventureoflink, probably in the How To Library, if you need help with that.

You might get away without it, but then again it might be a long walk or expensive tow, if you don't
