Default 04 Ion window/door lining fell off, what to do??

Hey so I have a question:

I came out to my car the other day and saw a small black/rubber/plasticy looking thing protruding from the gap between the window and car plastic (where the paint starts.... i don't know how else to describe it) on the rear passenger side door. Thinking it was just something that got jammed in there, I started tugging on it to get it out, but it ended up being much larger/bigger than I'd thought. What ended up coming out was what appears to be the plastic/rubber lining that squeezes between the window and the exterior of the car--- it looks like what catches and drains water to the side. In any case, this piece of plastic is now completely removed from the door. MY QUESTION: is this bad? Will the car experience damage if this thing remains out, like if rains? I'd imagine that even with it in there would still be some water that got in there.... but if I should get this repaired please let me know!

Thanks, and sorry for the bad description... if any clarification is needed please ask!

heres some pictures. I apologize for the camera-phone quality, but hopefully you get the idea.

Pic 1: a closeup of the plastic piece. it has a felt-like texture on the side that was in contact with the window.

Pic 2: the entire piece. pen is included for scale. The piece ran the entire length of the window, but is now brittle/frayed at one end from age and me pulling it out.
http://img684.imageshack.us/i/122209170000.jpg/

Pic 3: this is where I pulled the piece out from. a small portion of it (about 2-3 inches) was protruding from between the window (below my SPS sticker) and the rubber lining that you see in the picture.
http://img189.imageshack.us/i/122209165901.jpg/

Pic 4: The piece, at least I assume from its shape/length, ran across the entire window, including the large part that rolls down to the other part that stays in place (the part with the SPS sticker).
http://img85.imageshack.us/i/122209165900.jpg/

Like I said, the piece looks like it was a piece or rubber/plastic that fit between the window and the door exterior and functioned to drain water that went down the window down to the end of it. I just want to know if this is something that needs to be replaced to avoid water damage in the interior of the door.

Thanks for any help

yes, I would replace it. it keeps the majority of the water out of the door, without it there, it will allow corrosion and other problems. you should be able to pull that door panel off and replace it yourself, or maybe even do it without removing the panel. it looks like what you buy is the whole black rubber piece that starts at the painted panel and goes all the way to the window.

Hi,

Sounds like fun. I removed my Interior driver's door panel to diagnose/repair bad door lock wires. The rubber lining (felt on some models) on the Interior looked very easy to remove/replace (with the felt upgrade or otherwise). I wouldn't be surprised if the opposite (exterior) lining would be similarly straight forward.

I haven't considered removing my Poly Panels yet... but I wouldn't be surprised if it's just a few bolts and some gental nudging to detach it from the door.

Take some pics if you decide to undertake the project. We might all find it interesting/helpful.

it's a little bit of a process, and do not take of an exterior door panel without a manual, or at least the proper sequences.
