Default 99 SL ignition Switch replacement Q's

My 99 SL is displaying the same symptoms as my 04 Ion did when the ignition switch went bad. On random occasions, I get no crank (had something to do with an anti-theft feature that was malfunctioning).

Vehicle has a new fully charged battery.

Car cranks and starts fine most of the time.

No amount of starting attempts helps when this happens, you just have to wait about 10-15 minutes and it will crank and start just fine.

I jumpered the neautral saftey switch last time and no difference, so I believe it to be fine.

There is no noise at all when it does this and all other electrical works fine.

There is no power draw (lights wont dim at all when attempting to start).

Starter seems to crank perfectly when it works.

If I change the ignition switch, does it have to be re-programmed? and if so, is there a manual way to program it?

Thanks,
Matt

Default Re: 99 SL ignition Switch replacement Q's

when i changed my ignition switch on my 95sl1 i just put in another another ignition switch and plugged in the connector i didn't have to program anything. I believe a 99 SL has the same ignition plug as a 95 does so i don't think you have to do any programing. I hope this helps

The problem with the Ion sounds like it was related to an imobilizer chip that's in the key not being read properly. It thinks it's being stolen so it won't start for 15 minutes or so. I don't think the 99 SL has anything like that. It's more likely a bad connection causing a voltage drop so the relay won't trip.
