2001 SL2
Default Choosing a Saturn

Alright, new to forums in general and I'm terribly sorry if there is already a discussion on this, but I'm looking to buy a Saturn and have a few choices. First off, I started driving my mothers 2001 SL2 with the 1.9 SOHC and 5-spd. Loved how easy it was to work on. Years later I bought an Impala LS, but it eventually had an engine fire so here I am looking for a Saturn. My first choice is this '04 Ion 2, grandma owned with 91k miles, but I know little about it. Would I be better off with getting a 2nd/3rd Gen S-Series? If so, is there muvh difference in the reliability and ease of Maintenance on the DOHC variant of the 1.9? Also just for s**ts and giggles, I bought new tires for my Impala 225/60/16 would they fit on any of those with 4lug to 5lug converters?

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

2004 ION-2 Sedan
Thumbs Up Re: Choosing a Saturn

First off welcome to the Forum! I have a 2004 and love it so far. There has only been 1 part that needed to be fixed which was the shift positioner for the reverse lights and that was really easy. My car came with the 16 inch rims but since this car is smaller it uses 205/55/16 so those tires I think will be too large to fit without rubbing. My brother had a car with the 1.9 and it was ok without needing much of anything for the 8+ years he had it. That engine I am not as familiar with since I never really worked on it at all. The 2.2 has tons of room in the engine bay since the battery is in the trunk so working on it should be pretty easy.
Good luck with which ever you choose!

I bought my '03 Vue exactly 11 months ago and have put 43k miles on it in since.
It is a 5 speed manual trans. It had 146k miles on it when I bought it. The engine had just been replaced due to bad chain tensioner, guides, oiler with an updated '04 engine which had 39k miles on it. The odometer now reads 189k. Still going strong.

I recommend any of the S-Series. These are the cars that made the Saturn brand legendary. I owned three: a 93 SL2 which I foolishly (in retrospect) traded to buy a brand new 2001 SL1. I bought a 2002 SL1 when I heard it would be the last year the S series would be made. One of my sons allowed someone 'borrow' the 2002 SL1 and wrecked it. I also sold my other sons, in turn, to use my 2001 SL1 with the caveat "when you are done with it - I WANT IT BACK !" I got it back FIFTEEN years later in 2016 ! They drove the car hard. It crossed the USA four times. It survived a tornado in Oklahoma ! My son called from inside the car in a panic. He pulled off into a ditch and told me the wind was unbelievable and just blew the windshield wipers off the car ! The car now has 192,000 miles on it. It now sits in my driveway and is still a daily driver. I've had no major repairs, only the usual stuff that must be replaced during 17 years.
The SL1 comes with a SOHC. It doesn't have as much power going up hills. The SL2 with a DOHC is stronger. But be careful, if it has an Automatic tramission. If the tranny fluid hasn't been changed every 50K it won't last. The 2003 Vue with the Honda engine has a good reputation but I never owned one. To be polite, the ION has a spotty reputation.

online biker I can't tell if you love the car that much you wanted to try one every year or if you had so many problems with them that you just kept buying a new one. it is so encouraging to hear so many people talk about how they've had long histories with their cars and they didn't give up on them and the car is never gave up on them either. I wonder if there are other car companies where their owners felt this kind of appreciation and loyalty towards the brand? Scott

I know some Vues come with Honda engines, those get rave reviews from people.
