Default Transmission Filter

At this point I don't really want to go through draining the transmission fluid and replacing it, but I was thinking of putting a new filter on. Is this beneficial, or is it completely worthless if not draining/replacing the fluid?

I won't say entirely useless to do that, but I would replace both @ the same time.

Why not just use some inexpensive DexIII fluid and a new filter and call it a day?

+1

Especially seeing as how easy it is to drain and fill on these cars.

I'm relatively new to working on my own car and before finding this forum, I had never tried to do anything myself. I did some searching, and it just seemed like draining the transmission fluid could be difficult and problematic. I guess I'm still trying to understand the difference between the drain and flush, though.

I wonder if richpin has a video for this? That might give me more conifence to give this a try.

If I go ahead and figure out how to drain the fluid, would a quart of cheap DexIII and a Wix filter suffice for this?

Drain and fill is just that. Very convenient and cheap, as you'll only need to buy a few quarts to top it off.

The flush involves the flush machine being hooked up to the transmission cooler lines, and letting the car run making the fluid circulate for several minutes until mostly new fluid is in the tranny. It costs about $80 and up at most shops. Downside is obviously the price. Not recommended by some (think the issue is possible dirt getting loose and clogging passages, creating transmission problems), but I've done it on almost all my cars without any problems, and would do it again when its needed and when I have access to the machine again.

You'll need 4.5 quarts for a drain and fill, according to one post

Thanks everybody! I'm going to give this a try.

I'm planning to go by the auto store and pick up one gallon of store-brand DexIII/M (Advanced Auto) fluid, a 7 qt. drain pan, and a 12 qt. recycle can. I think I have all the tools I need here. Is there anything else I will need? Thanks again!

i actually just tried to change mine the other day. i just barely couldn't get the filter wrench on it from below, and i didn't have the tools the other day to take out the air filter box and resonator. if you can change the filter you'd be silly not to change the fluid as well, seeing as thats quite simple to do and getting the filter off is all the effort of this job

Unless you have another car, I'd pick up a little extra ATF. People have reported varying amounts of ATF that comes out and needs to be replaced; I think I've seen reports of between 3.5 and 5.5 qts, with 4~4.5 being average for most.

If you can change your oil, you can do this One drain bolt at the lowest point of the transmission, and a spin off filter. I believe wolfman wrote a How To in the How To library

A lot easier than other transmissions, where you have to pull the transmission pan and let it drain out of a corner of the pan.

I went to the store today to pick up a wix filter, but they didn't have any in-stock. The guy there told me I should buy the PowerTorque transmission kit because it came with the gasket and something else. Do I really need the items in the kit, or will a basic screw-on filter be sufficient?

All you need is a good filter. Go to NAPA and buy the NAPA Gold filter. Its a WIX hiding in a NAPA box.
