2008 Astra XR
Default Winter wheel swap?

My daughter’s 2008 Astra 3 door XR came with the 17” alloy 10-spoke wheels and P225/45R17 all performance season tires. Also, it came with a set of steel wheels with P205/55R16 winter tires.

I need to replace the steel rims when I put on new winter tires for next year since they are badly rusted. I have the opportunity to buy a used set of the Saturn 16” alloy twin spoke wheels - does anyone know if they will fit on the 2008 Astra 3 door?

I believe you are referring to the 16" alloy twin spoke wheel, standard on the XR5 and optional on the XE5. As far as I know they will fit your Astra 3 door.

Thank you Paul. I think they should too but I had little experience with Saturn cars until my daughter wanted one. This web site has really been helpful with support from members such as yourself.

Hi Paul - I can confirm that the 16" alloy twin spoke wheels that came standard on the XE 5-door do indeed fit the XR 3-door which came with the 17" rims! I purchased Bridgestone Blizzak WS90 winter tires 205/55R16. Consumer Reports rates these tires tops for icy conditions which is what we get a lot in Canada's capital. The car looks great with the Saturn alloy rims instead of the rusty steel rims that came with the car. The smaller rim and taller tires will help with deep snow and helps to keep the costs down too. I found the rims in Montreal for $20 each and they still had the TPMS sensors which work perfectly. Thank you for your advice!

Did those smaller wheels throw the speedo off?

[QUOTE=Astra08;2378085]Did those smaller wheels throw the speedo off?[/QUOTE If this makes any difference, a couple of years ago I found a good deal on a used wheel and snow tire package. The tires I believe were a size 215/55-16 Ice X's on some cheaper "Sport Tuning" brand alloys. Even being a little larger than the standard size, my speedometer reading is virtually dead on correct. Yah, when the snows wear out the proper size tires are going on.

Hi Saturn08 - the online tire size comparison tool that I used to compare the 225/45R17 original tire size with the 205/55R16 rim and tire size indicated that the difference in diameter is 0.4% which I can not detect driving the car.

Yes, that would figure.

Good to know, thanks. When I upgraded to larger wheels on my Wrangler, I had to change the tire size values using my scan tool, but it doesn't have that menu option for the Opel or Saturn Astra.

A lot easier than having to swap speedo gears at least.
