Wrench tire size

what is the biggest 14 inch tire I could possibly fit on my saturn sl 1. I was thinking about a 205/70/14 on the rear and a 195/70/14 on the front. Because of a cheap budget Pep boys has 14 inch rims for 200.00 from proline

I would not recommend using a wider tire on the rear than the front of a front wheel drive car unless you want to make it understeer worse than it already does now. plus it would look goofy. also 195/70-14 and 205/70-14 are quite a bit taller than the OE 175/70-14 so you may have problems with clearance. you could go with a 185/65-14 instead and maintain speedometer accuracy.

Discount Tire's website: www.tires.com has some really cool tire info in the INFO CENTER area. They have a TIRE CALCULATOR at: http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/infoTireMath.dos

205/70/14 vs. Stock 185/70/14 has a 1.65" taller height (overall diameter). I would not go with anything higher than 0.60 inches taller than stock with stock springs. If it's lowered, limit it to stock height for an SL2 which has 195/65/15's or an overall height of 24.21 inches.

Also keep in mind that sizes do slightly vary from each manufacturer.

My 95 SL1 is lowered with Eibach springs (1.3") with 205/50/16 all around and will occasionally rub when I go over railroad tracks or large dips at speed.

similar question:
i only "need" to get 35k miles out of 'em.
96sl, 167k miles.
should i go with the 'stock' 170/75/14 (~$180 from sears general tire)
or 185/75/14 (~$120 from sears guardsman III/TE)
or 185/70/14 (~$150 from sears guardsman III)
or let it all hang out and get some viper tires?? http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/produ...00&tab=spe#tab
???

about 25k miles per year, mostly hiway. some city. mostly no-sno, some sno (but i also have a truck incase it snows too much)

If you are buying rims, why not get the 15" ones and use the same size tires as a SL2?

It'll be a lower profile sidewall and wider tread. The overall diameter stays the same so speedometer error is not a factor. You gain better handling, better selection of rims in 15", etc.

first off you need to know what the different numbers on tires mean.

Example: 195/65/15

195 is how wide they are, in this case 195 millimeters.

65 is how tall they are, in this case 65% of how wide they are, so 126.75 millimeters (195, width of tire, times .65, 65% of width of tire).

15 is what size rim they will fit on.

for the most part people know what the first and last number mean, but not the middle number.

picking a tire will be based on these numbers. a wider tire will generally create better road surface, for better handling, but a taller tire. a tire too wide will not fit on all cars becuase they will rub the struts. not all 15 inch tires will fit on all 15 inch rims, either. the width of the tire may excede the maximum holding width of the rim, Example: you cannot put a tire with a size of 295/30/15 (11.61 inches wide, 3.48 inches tall, 15 inch rim fitting) on a stock saturn rim. stock saturn rims are 7" wide and cannot hold a tire 11.61 inches wide.

i have aftermarket wheels that are 17x7 (17 inch rims that are 7 inches wide) with 205/40/17 on them, but they can hold up to 225/any number/17 on them. so, on your saturn rims, i would stick with anything 205 or lower. they will fit fine on your car and give a better ride. best size for a stock saturn is 195/65/15, but you have 14's so i would say that anywhere between 185 and 195 will be quite sufficient. what you need to look at is the quality of the tire and your budget.

hope this helped you guys.

oh, and, messing with tire sizes in this range will have a VERY LITTLE and unnoticable difference, to no difference at all in the accuracy of your spedometer.
