Wrench Passenger side seat belt jammed (97 SC2)

Hi all,

I've lurked for a while learning about my Saturn from you experts, but now I find myself in need of some specific information that I hope someone can help me with so here goes my first post...

The passenger side (front) seat belt on my '97 SC2 has stopped feeding at all. I finally got the tools necessary to open up the panel behind which it was seated and took it out, but I have been going over it back and forth for a long while now with little success. I did find that the belt seemed to have gotten misaligned deep in on the roll, but adjusting that back into alignment just made it feed more seat belt into locked position rather than allow me to feed more out.

It seems similar to what the thread below talked about, but instead of attempting to resurrect a seven year old thread I thought I'd post my own.
Seems I am not allowed to post a url until I have more posts, so just posting the thread id here: /forums/showthread.php?t=90337

It mentions feeding the spool with a screwdriver, but I can't find anywhere to fit a screwdriver to feed the spool. There's a small plastic rectangular indentation on one side of the spool right around the center that I thought might be what was referred to but trying to turn that just deforms the plastic. On the other side is an assembly of cogs and a kind of pendulum but I have been unable to find anything there that will release the belt either.

I hope this is something that can be fixed and that it isn't permanently locked into position. It would be strange if it was, because it was working just fine until a couple of weeks ago and now it isn't - there was no collision or any such that should have tripped a safeguard. If it is permanent, I suppose I will have to go to a junkyard in the hopes of finding a working replacement...

Attaching a few pics of the assembly in the hopes that someone will be able to recognize and/or be able to point to specific parts.

If anyone has any idea what I can do to fix this or any advice, please let me know - thank you

Although this doesn't answer your question, I thought this was revelant... You may want to go to the JY and grab a replacement. Around me you can grab one for 20 bucks. You want something that will be reliable during a car crash. Taking the mechanism apart may affect the reliability of the restraint. That is why most people go for the replacement method rather then the fix-it method. Check your local JYs at car-part.com

Thank you for responding Yeah, I agree, that's why I did not touch the parts of the assembly that specifically said not to touch them - I was just hoping to see if there was any potential "simple" fix available that did not require fiddling with safety-specific bits first.

I was actually JUST looking up where my nearest junk yard was - that site unfortunately did not help, but with some Google-digging I did find a junk yard not too far from here where they have a 97 SC2 that just came in, so I think I'll go look there today.

Thumbs Up Re: Passenger side seat belt jammed (97 SC2)

I was lucky to find a junkyard nearby that literally got my exact model in yesterday, with a complete passenger side seatbelt assembly for me to disassemble and take home Installed and looks to be working great, did not anticipate such a quick resolution going the junkyard route!
