I was looking at a 03 or 04 ION electric P/S. I was hoping someone could tell me a little about the unit. Specifically its controls / electronic related. I see the column and a control module. Can this be installed in another car? Is whats on the column, motor and control module all it needs to work? I want to install electric P/S in my car and don't know if theres more neadded... thanks

According to my manual it has a Class 2 serial data link to the instrument panel (probably insignificant) and to the BCM. Whether it will work properly without the BCM link is anybody's guess.

Were not working with supper glue or duct tape, may seem like a odd question I have asked here.
I understand a little about automotive computer systems and think the links to the main computer are important. The question is with out them what would be the default the system would switch to. I would think a middle ground power steering assist but maybe zip.. Here is a link to the car I am building, Mid engine V8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42BAakgYkHg |

Yours is an excellent question. It would potentially be a great way to add PS to older cars.
From descriptions I've read of these systems, they vary the assist based on road speed -- more effort when parking, less on the highway. Some also vary assist according to angle from center. That is probably the reason for a link to the 'puters. Power may be controlled via the BCM too. PS -- my son is building a 944 w/LS1 |

The systems now are getting so integrated that they all rely on each other to be there is they shoudl be. The electric PS needs to be able to see and comunicate with the other systems. I doubt very much that it woudl operate as a stand alone.
