Default Flywheel

Can anyone tell me if the reason for the ecotec's horrible down rev is due to a heavy flywheel... or is it an engine management issue?

Love the car, I'd just like to squeeze some more performance from it.

I dunno, but I would say so. The IONs isn't as bad as the VUEs in some cases, but they both are awful.

If I could get some sort of confirmation on this, my next question would be where do I find an after market flywheel.

SPS has flywheels for Ions,.. (see the baner adds). Apart from that I can not confirm or deny since i'm not a performance minded person hehe

Most likely it's an engine management/emissions control issue, a lighter flywheel would not likely help much.

It doesn't seem much worse than the other GM engines I've seen - the 2.2L OHV engine in my old Sunfire would hang at higher RPM at least as much, if not more, than the Ecotec would when the throttle was blipped at idle. But then I don't really care, my Ion has the VTi..

What are you referring to as "downrev"?

If you mean that it's hanging at higher revs, this is an emissions system issue, and there is nothing you can do about it. If you mean that the revs fall off TOO fast, then a lightened flywheel would solve this, at the expense of some added NVH.

On a manual transmission, the engine is also programmed to retain a bit of rev in anticipation of the next shift. Not much you can do about that unless you reprogram the computer.
