16 or 18 gauge will do it. 16 will be easier to weld.

Ripped off the carpet today, and it doenst look good, half the driver side is so badly rusted out, i dont know if i can repalce it, the cross members the boards sit on are gone, there is nothing left of them. I tried to find out any way i can put some new straps on or anything, and it looks like the car is gonna go back to saturn, i want them to look at it, because i think this should NOT have happend so early.... this has to be something else as a problem. The rust went right up from the firewall straight down the driver seat, and now i need a new driver seat because i had to cut one of the frame peices to get to it. I have seen K cars in better condition then this, and it looks like the rust has caused about 10 years of damage, which leads me to believe it was a problem in the firewall or soemthing else close to it leaking. I will return tomorrow with some pictures of the damage.

I am aslo just kinda curious, When i started cleaning up the metal and rust bits, i show no kind of subframe or anything for the floor, should there be metal straps everwhere to keep it in order? Because if there is supposed to be, then it looks like im getting some other work done... :S

Well, i have both some good news, and soem sad, and unexpected news. Last night around 9:00, we were on the last weld and last panel for the floor boards, ready to giv'r and it looks like the fuel return air lines are toast. We pulled out the hose and the fire extinguisher, and it looks like it was just a rubber hose, but we dont know for sure. I am not sure about the damage that was done to the car, but i will know in about an hour after i get my work cloths on. If anyone can spread some light on the situation here, it would be fantastic. or it looks like im going to be moving over to a 1987 Toyota Corolla SR5 RWD CARB 1.8 with a bit of body work to do.

Thanks in advance,
Dan

Whats the story behind this car? Almost looks like it had been sitting in water for a period of time.

Also, I have a 1995 SL2 that is just the bare spaceframe. If you need a reference pics, let me know.

WEll, the panels are already welded on now, may i add, well done (thanks to my dad :P) but fromwhat it sounds like, the drain plugs sealed totally, one should have been left open, and there should have been a hole leading to the frame, then the hole in the frame outside for some circulation, there was just holes, but now since the last weld, all my fuel lines bursted into flames, im going to just add some new peices and see if it works, because it is well over 400$ to get them replaced.
