Default Bad front wheel bearing?

I have 1996 SL2 with 180,000 miles on it. I'm noticing a high pitch whine at 55 and above, I thin it may be bearing related. It does not make the sound when revving and holding at 2000 rpm parked. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Does the noise change if you steer a little to the left or right when driving? If it does it's probably a wheel bearing.

No change in sound when turning wheel. The sound is like a whirling sound it gets louder the faster I go.

I just rotated the tires. Sound is still there. I jacked up the car after my test drive to wiggle the tire. Should there be any play? I am getting some side to side play.

There should be no play, but you want to check it at the 6 and 12, 3 and 9 will tell you if your tie rod ends are bad.

If it is just starting to go you may not have any play yet.

Looks like I need to replace a bearing. Any one done this lately? Autozone has the bearing for $30. Do I need the slide hammer? Should I try to find one at a junk yard? How hard is this job? Thanks. Sorry for the rambling....

Its not a very difficult job...there are a few ways in which you can replace the bearing. Take the knuckle/strut assembly off the car and then bring it to a shop for them to press the bearing out and put the new one in.

The way I did mine was with the Harbor Freight front wheel bearing kit. http://www.harborfreight.com/fwd-fro...ers-66829.html
I took the knuckle off the car to make for easier access to the snap ring, even though with the kit you can leave the knuckle on the car. The snap ring will likely need a lot of persuasion to get loose and out. In my case I wasn't concerned with alignment because I was replacing the struts anyway. The kit works really well for removal and installation but I would recommend having pneumatic tools to make life easier.

I can get just the bearing for about $45 and a local parts place will press it in for $39. Need to have in by 10:00 am to get it back the same day. Any tricks or tips? Do I need the tie rod end puller? I wish Richpin had a video on this. The only one I could find was super fast and hard to follow. Thank you.

To remove the strut/knuckle assembly is just the three nuts on the strut mount (in engine bay, by strut tower) and then the tie rod, lower control arm and axle nuts. Be prepared to pop out both ball joints from the knuckle. You'll also have to move the caliper off of the rotor and set both aside. Just do a search, plenty of info on this site.

gizzy, are you available Saturday in Sussex to assist? Or any one else in the western side of Milwaukee. I don't know my suspension terminology well but I have not seen the knuckle/strut assembly how-to version. So I can take that assembly in and they will be able to press the bearing? Thanks.

your play is likely a bad bushing in the lower control arm. your whirring sound is quite possibly the bearing, especially if it's still there after a tire rotation. i hate to see you blindly throw parts at it, but all those parts are probably due for replacement anyway...
