Default 2.2 Timing Chain replacement set

I'm replacing the TC set in the junkyard engine that I'm about to swap into my '02 Vue. The engine appears to be a 2005 model, with supposedly about 80k on it. Looking for recommendations on timing chain brand, style, etc. I'm not entirely familiar with these Ecotecs. Do I need the complete set with cam gears or just the chain and tensioner components? I've tried searching the forums but haven't found a thread on how the brands stack up.

Right now I'm looking at the Cloyes brand 9-4201S. Under $120 on Amazon:

The "rock" has a few other brands - Melling, Sealed Power, etc, and the Cloyes without the cam gears.

TIA!

I think normally everyone recommend the cloyes. No mater which one you buy you want to be sure to get the new revision timing chain tensioner, the one with a raised cone on the head. the smooth head is the old style.
I've used cheap ones that came with new gears and chain without problem but you know what you get with the cloyes.

Thanks, that's kind of what I was thinking. Shoot, there are new complete sets on eBay with the gears for $45! But as always, ya get what ya pay for. I believe I'll just stick with the Cloyes and get the entire set with new gears. I only want to do this job once!

Yah, always replace gears and chain together.

I'd attempt to get the version 3 tensioner. The one in the photo looks like version #2. A phone call might clarify what version it currently comes with. Note the little hat on the top, also look at the diameter of the piece that extends out the bottom.

Check this link, this is when I did mine a year ago.

I got mine on e-bay for about $50, and it came with Ver 3 tensioner

With only 80 K miles why replace the TC?

Did you start the motor already and it sounded like the TC was sawing away?

Does the motor have any sort of guaranty? ANd you want to work on it before that and give the JY a reason to deny a potential claim?

It sounds like a money pit is starting... sorry. I don't see the need unless it's giving you trouble( and you gave no indication that it was).

No warranty on the engine. I'm replacing the TC as a preemptive measure since the engine is still out of the vehicle and they're cheap. It's clean enough that it may actually be an 80k engine, but I have serious trust issues with stories from the PO. Also, now that I know the difference, the JY engine does NOT appear to have the new style tensioner.

Awesome video from Cloyes on the procedure. I'm sold on their brand after this:

I talked to a seller of an 03 vue 2.2 that has a new timing set but won't start. Auto trans. Won't start. Will take 200 for it. I must be nuts to look at a no running cvt vue.

Anyone with a Vue that is equipped with a VTI trans and won't start , will take anything you are willing to pay. Some may pay you to take it.

That is the kit I used three years ago when I did mine. Zero problems since then.

Good instructions as well iirc.

Does the engine have good compression/test it prior to anything, if at all possible.

YOu are replacing the WP,right???? It's SOP for this job since you're all about preemptive measures , maybe I missed it metioned already?

Don't forget a new Tstat, as well.
