Default engine from '92-'93 compatible with '95 car?

my car is a 1995 SL MT DOHC. fried the engine a while back when it ran out of coolant.
I have a DOHC motor available that was taken from either a '92 or a '93 SC .

Will it be a direct fit to my car?

The heads are different and generally incompatible.

As a general rule:

91 model year is a beast within itself as it did not have many things that were present on later model year cars.

92-94 are basically compatible with each other.

95 is getting into Gen 1.5/Gen 2 territory, so some engines and car interiors are a mish-mash of first and second gen part fittings (think of the EGR Valve, and in some cases the Cam Cover as some were Aluminum and I think in 95 some engines started seeing the Composite Covers until the full switch over in 95-96 model year).

To the OP- are you looking to swap an engine or ? If so, just find one that is reasonably priced/mileaged for your model year 95 car and the same transmission (Auto or Manual) and just drop it in.

'91-'92 you'll have to swap the crankshaft to a '93+ to put the block in a '93+.
If it's a '93 then other than the EGR it's good to go. Even the EGR is "fixable".

Check the VIN stamped on the bell housing flange, right where the coil packs would cover up. Should be the last 8 digits of the VIN of the car it came from use this page to figure out the year: http://www.differentracing.com/tech_...in_decode.html

The proper way to fix a S-Series automatic is to replace it with a 5spd O:)

EGR won't work with a '95 PCM.

Swap the PCM out of the car you got the motor from and it'll drop right in.

You can install the electric EGR on the old engine, leave the PCM alone; especially if you have emissions inspections.

I only have the engine, I dont have the bell housing flange.
Is the VIN stamped into the engine anywhere?

Also, is it possible to tell if its the 91-92 crank or the 93-95 crank by looking at it?

No...

Refer to OldNuc's Photos.

You may have to really clean your engine up near the bottom.. there is alot of grime and dirt that collect just south of where the Coil Packs are located in order to see the numbers stamped into the block and bell housing.

if this is a 1993 can I assume the block crank and pistons etc are identical to the 1995? I'll use a 1995 head if need be.

P=1993

Only issue will be making the EGR work, if you can "fake" a drill press in your garage that isn't really an issue either.
