Default alternator replacement

Hi all, I am trying to be proactive in deciding how to replace a failed alternator. So far I have the original one at 216K miles, runs fine. I keep reading about buying a rebuilt one from a local back alley shop. On the other hand, ebay has sellers listing new ones (not Delco of course) for about the same price, $85. Rockauto also sells rebuilt ones for under $100. Any input on this?

Default Good question, hope answers come soon...

I too am trying to plan for what alternator to get. I have *heard* that remanufactured water pumps and alternators are often just old ones that have been sent to a 3rd world country, repacked with fresh bearings and grease, painted and sent back. That might be an urban legend but it doesn't reassure me at all about reman. parts from major chain stores.

I still can't forget the time I had a new oil filter cartridge for the LW2 wagon just sort of fall apart in my hands as I was getting ready to put it in the cartridge housing. On one piece of the debris was the stamp "Made in India". Caveat emptor, I guess.

A rebuilt one from your local parts store will work just fine.

Rebuilt parts and ebay are 50/50. Sometime you can get a rebuilt part and have it work fine for ever, and some times it last a day. Has a atl go on my old 67 ford f100 got a rebuilt on lasted 2 days, took it back under warranty and exchanged it hat one lasted me a few years. my .02 get a rebuilt one with a year warranty vs ebay with no warrenty.

I have a local shop that rebuilds them. If I have a problem he stands behind his work and I keep the $$ in the local economy. I did a search on local alternator repair shops in your area and came up with a couple... call and ask them about prices, warranties, and check with your local BBB.

This is where I go to get the ones I use. Some have a lifetime warranty and they are all quality jobs.

I have a Pep Boys ProStart "100% new" alternator that has been in the car for 60,000 miles.

It passed a Midtronics test several weeks ago with flying colors.

I purchase most of my parts from Advance Auto. Typically they are remanufactured parts and most have a lifetime warranty. When they fail I take the old part down with the receipt (but they can also look it up) to them and they give me another one. No questions asked. With how long most of us are keeping these vehicles, I have more than made out with all the parts I have had replaced under warranty.
