Default Thinking about buying a VUE

Are they still a viable purchase? Pros / cons?
i'm looking for a smaller SUV, I've had good luck so far with my L300 & SL1.

Anything to watch out for, different years? Looks like 2008 was a redesign?

I've got an 04 with the Ecotec, 5 sp. and I have 352,000 miles on it. Biggest repair so far was the clutch replacement. Did it myself for about 300 bucks. Wheel bearings. Sway bar bushings and end links. Struts all around. Other small stuff that I can't remember. Nothing outrageous with my mileage.
My daughter has an 06 Ecotec 5 sp with 250,000 miles on it. Her ac compressor just failed, and her sunroof doesn't open anymore.

Not race cars by any means but we have had good luck with them.

What state are you in? The underbody does have rust issues. Front subframe. Rear trailing arm mounts are touchy.i have seen numerous vues with rear trailing arm mount rust issues noted by sellers. I rarely if ever see that on other cars? Usually steel cars have rocker rust. And fender wheel rust.

Yeah, I'm in MN, I know that the rust is something to look out for. I've been fixing up my SL1, may just drive that for now. At least with that I know what I've got as I've had it a few years now.

  • Steer clear of any Variable speed transmissions unless your specifically looking to do a manual swapout
  • Inspect front cradle mounts for rust. Its important to note that a visual inspection can be very deceiving as the rust is from the inside out
  • Early years had issues with rear suspension alignment bolts breaking.
  • Also look at rear training arms for rusted attach points on the frame.
  • Fuel lines rusting
  • 2002 -2004 have timing chain issues, Problem with oiler and tensioner

Thanks for the list, this is what I was looking for. Good to know about the rear suspension, I was looking at the V6 FWD or AWD, is the 4 cyl manual less prone to issues? Were the CVT transmissions in certain years/trim levels?
Also, good to know about the timing chain.

Not sure about 6 banger..

First couple years of 4 cyl had issues with timing chain. These were generally traced to the oiler issue, timing chain stretched, tensioner couldn't keep up with it, then BAM, trashed engine. anything past about late 2004 should be OK, but I would still upgrade the tensioner to the latest version

Manual trans should be good shape. although a 15 year old clutch and slave cylinder are getting near their end.

Look at the front engine cradle mounts, these are probably rusted away if the vehicle is driven up north. I just repaired mine:

Two other other issues that common with Vue's are
  • front brake hoses, cause wheels to stay locked up, drag, not release.
  • Front wheel bearings, seem to fail more than normal
