Default 2001 SL1 High idle - cant get ECTS clip off

149k on my good SL1. 3k idle in park, 1300 while stopped at light. Sprayed cleaner in TB and replaced IAC. Will take TB off and fully clean tomorrow. Start/off/restart doesn't help. Sprayed brake cleaner on all intakes, nothing. Have thermostat to replace also tomorrow what the hek. Have new TPC if needed also. Can't get the clip off the ECTS. Cream color-delicate-don't dare horse it. How do I get it apart?

Car runs great otherwise. Please help.

The ECTS connector has a black part that is attached to the white top where the 2 wires enter. On the bottom, closest to the head, there are 2 ears on the black section. Squeeze in on them and it will slip off with no force. The ears are longer than the surrounding part. You can feel them if you are careful.

I put a needle nose in there and did squeeze but nothing. I can't hardly get my fingers in there, but will retry gently tomorrow with needle nose or redo with fingers...wish me luck.

Needle nose squeeze the wrong end, have to use fingers. Stick one in there and locate one of the ears, the other one is on the other side. Then just pinch the ears. You are right, there is next to no room. Do not trash the connector, its $30.00 or so to replace from the dealer.

Those have to be the cleanest hands ever for a mechanic. Richpin, you truely are a surgeon and thanks for all the help. (I realize you had to dress them up a little for the photo shoot). Keep up the good work.

What I liked most about this great photo is knowing that the gap to put your fingers in to squeeze the "ears" is about 1/3 the size of the average mans finger.

3000 RPM idle, gen-3 SOHC ===> intake manifold gasket leak. Start it up and spray brake cleaner along the mating edge between the intake manifold and the cylinder head, esp. around the #1 runner. If the idle changes, there's your trouble.

Yep-confirmed it. I sprayed on #1 and instantly it changed. Out in 12 degrees doing the manifold right now...Also, cleaned the Throttle body-found the IAC pintle had unscrewed (?) from the shaft-was lodged in the TB. Quickly screwed it back on and cleaned everything - huge amount of crud...

Thanks everyone. I had sprayed but not close enough-and it was a very specific spot on the mani where, once the spray hit, it dropped instantly...

Happy now-$21 and I'm good...

Sounds like you now have it all fixed. Might want to dig up another IAC or locktite that one together as the vibration and air stream will eventually take it apart again.

look underneath for a bracket attached to the lower part of the manifold that runs down to the drive axle intermediate shaft. And take off the upper bracket for the power steering.

Should not be any brackets on a SOHC. There are 9 studs holding the manifold.

Here is the answer. Power steering pump has to come back about 1/4 to 1/2 inch for clearance.

Got the job done, thanks to a post that says there are 9 (nine) N I N E manifold nuts, not 8....whodathunkit? I kept wondering-what is hanging it up on the left? Geez.

Get a long magnetic tool-use it to hold the nuts when taking off and when putting back on-lifesaver...also, I had to take the fuel intake to the manifold off-when pushing the mani back, it got hung up on that.
Cleared the codes, she's idling at 900 warm. HUGE SMILE, fist pump, chest bump, woo hoos.

Thanks to all of you...Snowmobile suited in 15 degrees here in MI...

Oh, the manifold on cyl 1 was shot-not even all there... huge wrinkles...quite something-considering it went 149k before it finally got bad...
