1996 SL2
Dizzy Center armrest

I have a 96 SL2. I have seen on other Saturns they have an armrest. Does anyone know where I can get one and for how much. Also, Can you lock them? Any help is greatly appreciated!

You can buy them from a dealerrship, or from a junkyard. Any center console from a 95 - 99 Sedan or a 95 - 00 Coupe will fit. They are lockable, but they use your ignition key, so you will have to have the lock re-done to work correctly.

They also show up on eBay from time to time.

They are kinda expensive.

Your SL2 isn't burgandy, is it? Just curious because I'm looking for the same part for my '96 SL2 in Richmond... Small world.

Anyway, I couldn't find any 1996 SL series at Chesterfield Auto Parts on Midlo Tnpk. They might have a '95 or two (the interior is the same), but none of the ones I found had the armrest. I was also looking for a headlight assembly, and haven't been able to find one in Richmond for the last 6 months.

Joe @ 6thplanetusedparts.com has them in stock, so you might try there. I just ordered my headlight from them.

They show up on EBay practically everyday for far less than the dealer charges for new. They DO lock with a small seperate key (NOT the ignition key) If you find one without a key do not despair, it was common practice to write the lock key code on the underside of the armrest in grease pencil (the part that is bolted into the center console) Any Saturn retailer can provide you a key with this code. Of note: I discovered that the center armrest on my daughters 95' SL1 and the one on my 97' SL2 actually used the SAME key.

I have the center console armrest thing from my 1996 SC2 (decommissioned on 3 Dec 2003) sitting on a shelf in my garage. It is black in color and I've got the two keys for it but the lock does not work well - the lock sort of jiggles around.

I always kept mine unlocked (ditto for glove boxes) because I figured that if somebody broke into my car and found a locked center console or a locked glove box then they would assume there was something valuable in there. Then they'd pry it open damaging the interior in the process only to find the owners manual, a pack of chewing gum, a pencil, and a soft pack of tissues. So the lock issue never bothered me.

Anyway, if anybody wants to buy my center console let me know. I can take pictures of it and post it in the Classified section of SaturnFans.

My console has no lock (and it came from my Saturn retailer in 1993), so if it matters to you make sure you ask before you buy.

Will that fit a 2001 or a 2002 SL1?

NO the interior chnaged in 00' center console armrest compatable years:
SL SL1 SL2 SW1 SW2
91'-94' compatable (NO locks, have fold out cupholders that nearly always break come in BLUE, BLACK, TAN and GREY)
95'-99' compatable (have locks, no cupholders BLACK and TAN only)
00'-02' compatable (can't remember if they have locks or not, BLACK and TAN only..)

Coupes are a bit more complicated.

ok so far the info is great. But I have been searching on the Internet and have found TWO different armrests. What is the difference between the first link and the second one? Again, thanks for you help guys.

First link is WRONG. That's a 00'-02' console thats pictured.

The EBay link is indeed a center console for a 95'-99' SL or SW (1 or 2) Saturn. (You can see the lock in the pictures, and the coin cup that should be on the inside is missing)

I'm very confused about this "center console" being lockable. I have one in my 01' SC2 and I don't see a lock anywhere. None the less my glovebox doesn't have a lock cylinder. Kinda dissapointed. Is anyone sure that if this "center console " is lockable? Could you possibly have a pic of this "lock"? lol Thanks. Also how much would it cost to get a lock cylinder on the console and glove box? Thanks.

The lock is on the side of the console in front, but let's face it: anyone with a screwdriver can pry it open.

Here's a little hint. The console in my '99 SC-2 (and I'm guessing most of the consoles are the same way) has a rotating ashtray in the rear for back seat passengers (like peope of legal smoking age can really fit in the back seat of an SC-2 and be comfortable smoking.) It can be used to store money or small valuables and is likely to overlooked by anyone breaking into the car.

True. Most of this is plastic and the lock would only keep honest people out.

The keys and the lock work fine and the unit opens and closes fine but the latch part on the underside of the upper part is loose. I have not looked at it carefully. My hunch is this latch is hinged with two "pins" and one of the two pins is out of its hole . There are 4 Torx screws holding the "ceiling" of the upper lid in place and I can peek inside there to see if it can be make to stop jiggling. The unit opens and closes fine and the latch thing that jiggles does not rattle, it only moves about when we open the unit and play with it.

I'd want about $40 for it based on what others like mine have fetched on eBay. If you want I could put it on eBay and start the auction at a lower amount and we can see what happens. Here is a simple webpage with images of my center console armrest unit:
