Default shifting in opposite direction okay?

If I'm going in reverse, about 5 MPH, is it okay to shift to forward, gradually give the car some clutch, and give clutch and gas to stop the car, and start moving it forward? Or is that bad for the transmission/clutch? I do it sometimes because it's quicker and more convienient and smoother than using the brake.
Again, this is manual trans.

Definately stop the car before putting it into first and proceeding. You won't kill it if you don't, but your clutch will wear out faster. Spend a few seconds today, save some miles tomorrow. My '92 SC's got 90,000 miles on the original clutch, and I always stop before going forward.

Not to be an antagonist but....

I've got 110k miles on an original clutch for my 97SC2. I always use the clutch to push the car around (Rev -> 1st, hill hold, etc.) Not to mention the car is driven like a race car (Nascar style downshifts at lights, etc - Who needs brakes?).

The clutch has held up fine, and is just starting to not have that "factory fresh" feel. I'll prolly replace it at the end of the summer when it hit's 130k (now that I've got an engine support - Thanks Sattech.)

It's my impression that the Saturn transaxles are pretty bulletproof.

I agree with Walburger that the clutch is prety durable, but why put more wear on it than necessary? The clutch isn't designed to stop the car, it's designed to make it go. Use brakes for stopping and clutch for going. You're not really saving much time anyway.

By the way, I too drive prety agressively and have 117,000 miles on my original clutch. Had it inspected by the dealer and was told it needed no servicing and felt fine. I agree, but was just checking.

use the brakes!! that's what the brakes are for. doing that will burn out much sooner. brake pads/shoes cost $50-100 per set and you can replace them in 15-30 minutes in the back yard with a jack and jack stands. a clutch is $250-300 and takes a few hours to replace. the stock clutch on my 92 sc lasted 103,000 miles before the tips on the fingers on the pressure plate snapped from too many 4000 rpm launchs at the drag strip. the friction material was still good though but i use the brakes to stop in reverse before taking off in first. i don't hold the car on hills with the clutch either.
