Default oil like residue from exhaust

when i got my 98 sl2 it had a clogged cat so i cut it off and welded it straight pipe with a muffler now theres a oil like residue on my back bumper by the exhaust exit that looks like very thin oil, does anyone have any idea what this could be? i also have to redo my valve cover gasket with gasket maker because its leaking out the sides a little, i was thinking maybe oil is getting on the exhaust and making its way down the pipe somehow.
