Wrench Any help with Odometer and gas guage reading

I have a 93 SC2 with a working speedometer but, the odometer does not work. I was shocked to find that there was no cable going to it. This is the first car that I have owned like this. I am in for a new experience. I see the odometer is driven by a small motor. Is it this motor that goes out or does anyone know of an easy fix? I purchased a used guage assembly on ebay and am waiting for it to arrive. The gas guage is also not working. I tried the trick with the 3 wires in the trunk but, it still stays on E. Might have to drop the gas tank and check the float. Or do they not have them in Saturns? LOL! I am also waiting for a repair manual from ebay. Any help before these items arrive will be appreciated.

i've had the exact same 2 problems on my '93 sl2. the gas guage fix, i wound up dropping the tank and changing the sending unit to the tune of about $180.00 from my freindly satun dealer.

the speedo problem, as i've read on here, the gear that drives the odo is weak and sometimes using the trip odo can break the drive gear. speedo will work fine just no odo. i am waiting to get a used inst cluster and will try to change the gear myself. you can get the whole unit rebuilt for around 175.00 to 425.00. do a search here. either www.6thplanetusedparts.com or www.odometers.com.

someone posted a link on here a few weeks ago where you could buy the gear for $25

there is a float. before you drop the tank, grab a multimeter and take a ohm reading of the sender and check that you have voltage to the sender. take your measurement at the same three wire connectior in the trunk. i can remember which wires are which or what the resistance specs are, but i bet the manual will have the info you need.

yes, there is no speedo cable, instead, you have a VSS (vehicle speed sensor), take a look next time you do a oil change. its a two wire sensor right above where the Intermediate shaft is connected to the transalxe. it sends a signal to the gauge cluster(for both speedo and odo/trip) and the to PCM(for fuel calualations and shift points, and a few other small things)

hi there
My SC had the same issue with the broken odometer.
I bought a used gauge cluster for $30 off ebay it had 85,000
miles on it . It takes about an hour to switch it out. Mine works perfect
and is at about 105k now. One tip don't reset your trip meter it will break the gears in the odometer.

Unless you have a late model S-Series vehicle... they have a digital odometer and trip meter

Im just hoping that the used one that i got off of ebay will work. Getting tired of driving around without the top dash on the car. and the guage bezel off.

I got my used guage cluster in today. Put it in and now I have the odometer, and gas guage. The abs light was on so i played with the connection on the back of the cluster. Suddenly, abs went off and the temp guage stopped working. It seems as though alot of problems are in the connection on the back of the cluster. I will put my old cluster in tommorow and post an answer here if anything could be changed by wiggling the connection. Just glad I didnt have to drop the gas tank.
