Question Steering Wheel vibrates 65-80MPH. Clears Up Above That. (??)

My invincible '98 SC2 Red Hot.

Steering wheel shaking a bit from 65-80MPH. Clears up at 85-95MPH.

Has 4 TigerPaws about 20k on them.

Fronts were 28psi.
Rears were 26psi.

Put 40psi in the fronts & 35psi in the rears.

Vibrations now on & off every 4-5 seconds at the same speeds. (!!)

Rebalanced at the same place. No change.

Rebalanced the front tires at a different place.
One was dead on, one was off .75.

Still vibrates as before the re-balance.

ALL front end parts are tight & ALL new bushings put in.

Thoughts?? I have mine, but want to hear yours first.

Could be just a harmonic thing at that speed range.
Some vehicles exhibit this more than others.
In my neck of the woods, attempting to hit 75, or up to 95 would be very risky to ones drivers license. Kinda called reckless driving and automatic loss of license IIRC.

I'd swap front and rear tires and see what happens. Could be a bad tire.

Swap wheels front-to-rear; let's see what that does.

How about wheel alignment, has that been checked lately?

My guess? A bad tire, ply separation or belt not quite in right place. There are some kinds of imbalance that can't be easily detected or corrected.

Can you get somebody to drive alongside you and see if the front wheels are waggling side-to-side (shimmy) when this happens?

Tried to edit, but had timed out.
Can also be the rear tire balancing affecting the entire vehicle's harmonics.

id say wheel balance issue try and manual balance them u can youtube videos on this sometimes the balance machines at tire shops get off balance but still say they are balance, or add balance sand inside the tire which will find the spot and make it balance

Re-Balanced 3 total times at 2 different shops.

One-at-a-time front to back swap was 1st on my list.

Odd the air pressure affected harmonics of the issue, thus the post.

This might be a case where a simple spin balancer doesn't show an issue that a road force balancer would.

Do you have any other wheel/tire combos to bolt on? That'd eliminate half the things to look it, if the issue stays with the "new" tires then it's an issue car side...otherwise something is funky with the "old" tires.

No, it is not at all odd that tire pressure affected it. Tire pressure is a big factor in determining the "springiness" of the system. Harmonic vibration is all about mass-force-spring relations.

I had a similar issue with my Aura. When the tire shop tried to balance them, one couldn't be balanced. When they broke down that tire, they found handfulls of rubber crumbs from broken belts. Could be dangerous.

The tires have been balanced three times, but at what rpm? They need to get up to 900 rpm or more to get into the range where you are having a problem. I think most consumer-oriented tire shop balancers don't spin nearly that fast.

Really 75mph? 70mph is the speed limit on the highways here, and 75mph will often have you getting passed by others. The police won't even notice you at 75.

For the OP, I'd suspect something like a belt in the tire, but I'd also look at the rotors, and front wheel bearings. Maybe something in between the rotors and hubs? When you check the front end, make sure the suspension isn't at full droop as it may be keeping things from wiggling with spring pressure.

At a former job we had a work van that was starting to death wobble while braking and it ended up being a front tire that had gone bad.... broken/shifted belt, I'd guess. It didn't look bad, but once replaced the problem was gone.

One more thing..... is it always on the same road?

If swapping tires and balance doesn’t fix it I’d check for bad ball joints.

It vibrates on many different roads.

Will for sure let everyone know what it was once found.

I counted 7-8 seconds of vibration... followed by 7-8 seconds of stability.

Do you understand that it would be helpful to know if this is a shimmy/waggle or vibration/hop? The causes/fixes may be far different, depending on which it is.

Steering wheel shakes side-side 1/4" for 7-8 seconds.

Then it stops shaking side-side for 7-8 seconds.

On and on and on.... Day after day.

Cool tires, warm tires, or hot tires.

That sounds more like a "shimmy" to me, and I would be focused on alignment or tire damage more than wheel balance or suspension looseness. I can appreciate the difficulty in driving at 65+ with somebody "in formation" alongside, but if they could see the wheels waggling we could confirm. Shakes/vibrations are often hard to properly identify; the steering wheel probably could shake side-to-side even if this is not shimmy.

It's not always about balance.

A tire that is out-of-round can still balance up, but can hop like mad going down the road. You can balance a rotating square!! Tire pressure and position placement of the offending tire can change the amount of shake and the speed (frequency) that it shakes at.

When you have a shake that comes and goes every few seconds, it's usually a "beat frequency" between two tires bouncing. At one point, each tire's shake cancels the other out so there's no shake, and in a few seconds the tire's shake will actually add to each other (reinforce each other) causing the car to shake. Eliminating one of the offending tires or moving JUST ONE of them to a different placement on the car can often drastically change the beat frequency.

Here's the follow-up.

Place that did original rotate & balance wanted to rotate the fronts to the backs again.

Said Ok. That resolved the steering wheel shaking completely.

So the issue is at the back, but cannot feel anything.

Think I'll get at least the rear ones Road Force Balanced.
