Default Coolant Drain Plug

2001 SC2 Automatic.

Trying to change the water pump. I need to drain the coolant, but the drain plug is like a forward only screw. If you try to unscrew it, the screwdriver just slips off. I tried putting channel locks on it. Is there any easy way to do this?

There are two exits for coolant to be drained. Under the thermostat with a 10mm socket, or the plastic drain plug on the radiator. The one under the thermostat needs to be done if your doing the water pump

I just drained the radiator then when you take the water pump the rest of the coolant comes out.

The radiator drain usually has one of two style drain plugs - one with a big fin/handle, and one with a square hole that fits a 1/4" ratchet head perfectly.

first squirt it with silicone lube & then stick a 1/4" socket drive in it & turn it counter clockwise. it turns & comes out. take it easy as it's plastic & easy damaged...

the drain plug under the stat housing doesn't drain much coolant maybe a cupfull at best. not worth taking off really...
