Default 97 sc2 dies on highway

help.... my 97 sc2 with 100k miles died on the highway. Pushed it off and towed it home. It sat for a week and tried it again and it started.. put some gas in it and went to the store. Died again. Waited overnight and it started just enough to get home and she died right in front of my house. I hear the pump energize.. anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

I'd check for spark when it dies. Or if you have a Bluetooth OBD check for RPM when it is cranking. The classic failure for a CPS is it generally stops working when hot. That is a possibility.

I changed the crank pos sensor and it still dies. I pulled off the left 2 wires from the coils and no spark. Control module?

Put a (metal) paper-clip on one of those coil terminals to close the gap to the other coil terminal down to about 1/2"; then check for spark again. The distance for coil terminal-to-terminal is a bit too wide for a reliable test. And, of course, do the same test on the other coil.

Still no spark, then check for injector pulses with a meter or 'noid light. Just looking for "wet plugs" is also not reliable to determine if the injectors are pulsing.

Do you hear the fuel pump come back on when cranking? The initial 2-second run at key-on is meaningless for the diagnosing needed right now.

Check for spark on both coils when starting. Lack of spark on all four would point to the ignition control module. Intermittent problems are sometimes more difficult to pinpoint. .

One method to test for spark and fuel; spray starting fluid into the throttle body.

Is there a way to test the ecm?

Not really, not a full functional test. We can guide you on some tests of PCM inputs/outputs, but it will require far more skill than just checking for spark or injectors pulses. Let's get past those first...

To do much PCM testing you would need a specialized signal-generator, or slave CKP wheel/sensor, to provide the "7X" CKP signal.

It was replaced 2 years ago with a bwd brand from advance. I warranted it out with a new one. Keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks for the input

So I replaced the ecm under the coils and took off the left 2 wires and cranked it. This time there was strong arcing between the posts so I hoping that was the problem.. the last time there was nothing! Thanks for the suggestions! You guys are always a big help..

I think you meant icm, ignition control module, that has both coils mounted to it. The ecm ( engine control module) or pcm (powertrain control module) manage the entire EFI system.

Did replacing the icm get your engine running again?
