Default Very clean oil after switching to Purolator PureOne

Here are the two dip sticks,

Top: 02 SC2, 88k, Purolator PureOne PL10241
Bottom: 05 ION3, 66k, Purolator PureOne PL15436

Both with Pennzoil Full Synthetic 5W-30 bought in Walmart. Both had 3 month and between 3k-4k miles since last change.

In the past oil turned black within 1 month (Pennz Full Syn & Fram or Supertech). This result is actually a surprise to me.

Now my question is: Should I replace this oil and filter?

Depends, how much oil have you added?

The best approach is to run an oil sample as that will tell you the actual condition of the oil. As a plain old guess, you could very likely go to 4500. The filter is good to about 7500.

I add oil according to factory specs, 4qt for SC2 and 5qt for ION3.

What I meant was how much additional oil have you added since the last oil change? Or, how much oil does it use?

The SC2 burnt almost 1/2 qt suddenly after a 2 week winter parking and after that refill the oil level has never changed...
Is that what you mean?

Sort of....If you add 2 quarts between each oil change in theory you could extend your OCI (oil change interval) because half of your oil is being changed out with fresh oil.

On the other hand if you end up adding enough oil to equal 4 qt every 3 months your basically changing it without draining it.

Yes. As you are not consuming additional oil you should rbe OK out to 4500. After that I would run an oil sample. If you are running an oversized oil filter you will have a capacity of a bit more than 4 quarts.

This is a reasonable oil sample lab. http://www.blackstone-labs.com/

You could either sample it now or wait till 4500 and change it in and run the sample on the drain oil.

The color did not change much before and after refill because that was 0.5 out of 4 (the remaining oil was pretty good too). 1/8 of fresh won't do so much right?

When I was using Fram or Supertech, the oil was completely black after a month. I believe a mixture of 7/8 black and 1/8 fresh won't be something like the one shown in the picture.

Pennzoil Platinum will clean the crap out of the engine so u might see small drop in oil level then afterwards says about the same. BITOG praises the PP oil like heaven lol... so my idea to go for 3k to clean nasty sht out of it and get good quality filter and PP and target 4k oci then 5k oci

On the ION, run the oil until the Oil Life Monitor requests an oil change.

For the S-Series, run the oil to the maximum service interval-- 6-mo/6,000 miles, then test the oil to check its condition.

Pennzoil Platinum and the new Pennzoil Ultra are very underrated oils. They have a very strong detergent package and a very high TBN (generally good for long drains). It is not uncommon to see these new oils "clean up" dirty engines.

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums...58#Post1758658

Those "new oil reports" are for 5w-20, but the formulations for 5w-30 should be the same.

It's probably just not turning black anymore because whatever cleaning had to be done, is probably done.. The brand of filter should have minimal impact on color.... That being said though, Pennz Platinum and a PureOne filter, cannot go wrong with that combo.

If the oil is not black I would think the all the cleaning of the oil is now in the filter and the filter is most likely clogged. A totally clogged filter will put the engine into oil bypass filter mode. You might not be filtering your oil anymore so I would suggest a filter change at the least.

yes there is a bypass mode. Now imagine this, a cold engine with dino oil. the oil is very thick. It cant go thru the filter easily. So what happens? It will pop the filter if it cant flow out, SO, the bypass valve opens. unfiltered raw engine oil is moving thru the system.

No imagine its cold and you have synthetic. It flows easily in the cold. So it flows thru the filter. The bypass does not open.

The bypass opens at 8 psi on a stock filter and will open with thick oil at startup. This also immediately subtracts the 8psi from the oil pressure available to the oil galleries. The thick oil does not flow very well either and bearing lubrication is a matter of flow and not pressure. You have pressure so the result is flow. Cold oil will exhibit inadequate bearing oil flow but adequate pressure.

This is nothing but plain old classical physics.

This would be great! However PP performs poorly in winter after a relatively long period of parking...

I noticed the same thing this last oil change after switching to a pure one filter. I had been running the mobil 1 filter. my oil looks the same as the pictures above and has 6000 miles on it now, has been consuming a lot less than normal as well. I am pretty impressed with the pure one filter over the mobil 1 filter. I was skeptical at first, but it has shown me that it filters better.

Im sure I will catch hell for this but -

You can't tell how well your oil filter is working (or not) by looking at the oil, nor the color of the oil.

Oil filters do not change the color of your oil.

Im no rocket scientist, but Ive been working on cars for a long time.

If the oil doesnt get dirty, it isnt doing its job.

Have you ever heard of the blotter method of when to change your oil.......you let a drop of oil land on the paper and come back and after the oil spreads out to look at the dirt ring that was left.
