1996 SW2
Default RKE module failure ?

I am an original s-series owner and a longtime fan of this forum looking for some help. I have a weird remote keyless entry problem, and I haven't found any similar postings.

Both remotes stopped working at the same time on my daily driver 96 SW2.

Remote batteries are good, and the LED on the remotes' circuit boards illuminate when buttons are pressed.

I would think RKE module failure, but the remotes program normally.

The horn beeps once after lock and unlock buttons are pressed simultaneously (with OBD pins 4-8 jumpered).

However, neither remote will lock, unlock or release the hatch.

Interior lights work normally with right and left door open/close. Power locks work normally with door buttons. The car starts and runs normally (as one would expect. 96 had RKE but no security system). There are no codes in the PCM.

1. Has anyone else seen this problem before ?

2. Can an RKE module be "programmable" yet not function for lock/unlock ?

3. Does RKE need to come from a 96, or will one from a 97-99 work ?

Thanks in advance all.

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

Could be an electrical issue (fuse, cut or loose wire, solenoid, etc.) since everything else with the RKE works except the trunk release.

A few threads mentioned a bent pin in the trunk release (probably from shifting cargo) as the reason for the trunk not unlatching via RKE or the release by the driver seat well

It sounds like the current to the lock actuators is not present. Since it affects all 5 I'd start looking at the wiring out of the module or PCM that feeds all 5. I'm not sure where is originates from but someone will chime in.

ignore my post - misread the OP and thought only the trunk was not opening. Did not realize RKE was not working on the doors, too.

Does this help? Here are three pages of '98 rke wiring diagrams, presuming '98 is applicable to your '96 SW2. Correct me if I'm wrong.
