Something tells me that the battery may be interchangeable with other vehicles as well.
Didn't they use a GM battery?????

There are a LOT of parts that are the exact same on other GM vehicles - its really just the block/heads/transmission that are unique to our cars. Most every other sensor, electronics, shocks, basically everything else is common to other GM vehicles.

OK, bottom line- a mechanic at the Chevy dealer where I just got my 04 Cavalier told me he could put a used tranny for $700 or rebuild the one in the car for $1K. I've put too much blood, sweat and tears (no, not the rock group) into the car just to give up on her. If I have to garage her at my parents or aunt's houses til I can afford the job, fine. But I'm not going to listen to some joeboob mechanic who craps that Satty's aren't worth fixing. (BTW he wants to rid himself of his daughter's 93 S series for $1.5K)
I'm not giving up on Sparky, not by a long shot. I even found this place in Toledo, Oh that sells used engines and tranny for a decent price. (And none of this, oh the parts are hard to come by). I'd rather have my "child" in a safe place and not left another weekend in a repair yard so she can get vandalized. I'm actually looking to put Sparky in storage and get another little Satty to toodle to work in, and give the Cav back to my husband. Opinion(s)- is a Vue practical for a family of 5 (2 parents, a teen and 2 tweens), a SC just for me to go to work (3 dr please), the L series (or did it have too many problems?), or the flagship S-series? (No wagons, please. Brings back terrible memories of Smoke) Thanks for all of your opinions.

Does anyone know where I can get a decent engine/tranny for Sparky at a reasonable price in Southern California? It's more than likely that I'm going to get her back on Mon from the joeboob mechanic and have her stored at my in-laws til I can start rebuilding her. (I have a 2 year deadline til the oldest turns 16). Should I look in the Recycler for places that do engines and trannys, or rebuild the car first (still w/ stock suspension after 12 yrs & 215K mi), then worry about the powertrain and stuff? I thought about getting rid of her, but once we get our mobile home (don't laugh, homes in CA are absurdley overpriced and it's all we can afford), I can park Miss Sparky in our driveway and cover her up.
I figure 2 years and lots of parts from Summit and Jeg's will do wonders for her. By then I'll have been teaching for a year and can afford to have a toy to tinker with on the weekends to relieve some stress. Aah, a girl and her car. Can't help it. I used to hang out in a cycle shop when I was little and love things mechanical. Any help would be appreciated, and especially if you're in So Cal, or know of a place that ships fairly inexpensively. Thanks.
