1999 SL2
Default I think I've started a Saturn legacy

None of you will probably remember, but years ago I bought myself a daily driver that was a pristine 1999 SL2 with 85k miles on it. I eventually gave it to my son who drove it for two and a half years before it hit a curb doing too much damage to repair. It had 140k miles on it, and was still running great.

Wanting to help my son out, I started looking at Craigslist and found a 2001 SC with only 77k miles on it! They were asking $2,200, but it had a couple of issues, and I was able to talk him down to $1,700 and took it home that morning.

My son lives in Texas, so I went to work changing the fluids, and polished the headlights the day I bought it and the next day. I arranged for a flight for him to DC, and he flew into town eagerly wanting to see his new Saturn.

The good on the car:
  • The miles!
  • Radiator overflow tank had the date of the last time the radiator was flushed, and it was only three years ago.
  • Plugs and wires looked brand new.
  • Has really nice seat covers on the front seats and the seats look brand new underneath.
  • Newish tires (still had the brand name visible on the center rib).
  • He drove it home 1,600 miles without one issue.
  • He got 40.6 MPG on one tank!

The bad:
  • Sunroof sealed over at some point due to leaks.
  • Transmission filter looked old and was OEM plus the fluid didn't smell great.
  • Transmission selector wouldn't shift from park the morning he left, but it was 11 degrees outside. Started the car and let it warm up. 15 minutes later it was fine. He didn't have another problem the rest of the trip.
  • Had some typical rust starting on the engine cradle.

For $1,700 I think I stole it. He was tickled to death with it and was thrilled it was another Saturn. I think I've made a fan for life.

Sounds like a great score!

When the weather warms up, you can tackle that sub frame rust with a Wire Brush, Metal Prep, Primer & Paint.

It does seem the Saturn sunroofs are trouble prone. Might check to see if the drain tubes are intact and not damaged.

Hope your son enjoys that "New" car!

It was actually 40 degrees the day I brought it home and as I was changing fluids I did just what you suggested to the engine cradle. I did the same exact thing to the SL2, and it held up really well.

I am sure you're right regarding the drain tubes. It'll be a project for him.
