4yr. 200,000km endurance test - Astra vs Golf
Here is a summary and the original translated link.
Both performed extremly well.. till 170,000km (106.000miles) the Astra was slightly leading because it was as quiet inside as new where the Golf made sometimes a little noise from plastic parts inside. But shortly before the end of the endurance test the Opel Astra broke down because of a small cheap penny part. At 186,369km the engine stoped because of a brocken camshaft sensor.. fixed quickly but ruined the fault free endurance bilance..
The VW Golf had no problems at all, the only critic recived the material of the seats and gear shifter showed that the car was heavly used...
Both cars were completely taken apart after the test to observ rust in the chassie, wear at the engine and tranny parts.
No rust at both cars, the wear at the engiens were extrem low, only the head gasket of the Astra was damaged and would have need to be replaced.

I like the pictures of when they stripped it down and neatly laid out every part on the floor. Germans...
