Question Knocking Noise

I just bought this 95 Saturn SW2 and ever since I got it it's been making this knocking noise coming from the passenger's side of the vehical. I ran my scaner on it and it came up with a code that said, "53 Soft Flag Electronic Spark Control Over Maximum Value." So far I've replaced the knock censor and EGR valve and I had my coils checked, the one was working fine but the other wasn't making a good connection and the voltage would jump around, but when you got a good connection it was fine. And I checked to make sure that my water pump or alternater wasn't making the sound just to be sure. But I seem to be at a lost as what to look at next and hoped you guy/gals could lend me a hand. Thanks!

Check the Serp. Belt tensioner with a flashlight when the engine is running. If that thing is boping around it needs to be replaced. Hopfully it's that and not the timing chain.

Fast way to find out if the noise is coming from an accessory or the engine is to remove the serpentine belt altogether. Then, crank up the engine but just for a VERY short time frame as your water pump will not be moving. Run out, listen to see if the noise is still there, and then cut off the engine.

If noise is still there, it's something in the engine. If not, it's either an accessory or the belt tensioner. Try what Social said first though.

Ok I took my belt off and ran it, but still the noise remained. I'm not that good with this stuff but I've been locking in to what the ESC does and what components it consist of and from what I've found I'd be lead to believe that possible my ignition module would be bad, though I haven't had a problem starting it, but as I see it I'm not getting a trouble code that a censor is bad I don't know what else it could be. Also I know the ESC has a long to do with advancing or retarding the engine so if it wasn't working I'd figure my timing could be off and causing the knocking sound. Anywho just wondering if any of you know anything about this. Thanks!

I hate to say this but it is probably a piston rod knocking. You are looking at a major engine rebuild. You should stop driving it before it breaks and puts a hole through the block.

I just had a similar problem. At first we thought that had something to do with the tensioner rod or timing chain, but then my car was really low on oil so we though it could be that I messed up a valve or had a bad piston; it indeed was something to do with the tensioner and camshaft. The mechanic said that the time was about to jump and its a good thing I got it in when I did. They had to replace a pin in the camshaft and replace gears that were either broke or missing. Now its good as new except there is a chance the pin won't hold (I really don't like that it isn't guaranteed) so now I gotta save up so I can replace the cam if need be.
