Attention Knocking Noise!

I backed my car into my parking space tonight, when I noticed that there is some kind of intermittent knocking/ticking sound coming from the engine compartment.

I cannot pinpoint where it may be coming from. It sounds like it might be regular injector noise, but this is a bit loud -- and like I said, not a constant, regular noise.

I've made some videos (you can't see much, but you can definetely hear it -- especially in the second one) of the engine compartment so you can see what I am talking about.

Anyone have some ideas on what this could be?

Thanks a lot. Hopefully, nothing major. I just ran a fuel system treatment through it, so I figured that would've taken care of dirty injectors?

Oh, it's a 99 SL2 with an A/T and 68,000 miles

Also, I'm not referring to the light ticking that is FOR SURE injector noise, but the deeper sounding, intermittent noise that. It's more noticable in the second video.

Ok...

Just went out and took a second look. Some new information:

It DOES get faster with engine RPM (ie. higher RPM, faster the noise)

This leads me to believe that either an injector is clogged and/or bad... or it is something valve / lifter related....

Anyway, I'm going to take it in to saturn tomorrow and see what they say....

Night.

Hard to tell for sure but it could be a lifter, more upper end noise than bottom. I thought that I may have heard a bit of exhaust noise in there as well. It's almost like the camera picks up the noises to well.

I showed it to a friend of mine who is really good with cars and he said that it's an exhaust leak. In fact, he said 'I'd bet my balls on it.' The shop that just did my exhaust said that I had a bad flange gasket, too. So, that is probably what they were referring to. I'm going to change both of the gaskets and see if the noise goes away. If not, I'm going to take it to the dealer and find out what they think about it.

Camera's a Casio Exilim. Credit card size little thing that does 30 second movies and 3.2MP stills, I didn't think it would pick up the noises very well, but I guess I was wrong. :-)

Thanks.

If you have been old that you have an exhaust leak then hat is likely your sound. The manifold to pipe gasket would be the one to start with, that is liely what they are calling the flange gasket. Easy DIY if you are able to get under the front of the car.

"I'd bet my balls on it."
Not something that I would be willing to bet!

I'm going to pick the gasket up next week. Will probably get it through work (Firestone, so we get discounts) and change it at the shop. I'll let you know if that fixes the problem.

I guess he was absolutely positive of what the noise was! :-) That's coming from someone who really knows their stuff, on top of the muffler shop's statement -- so I'll fix it next week.

I had no idea an exhaust leak could sound like that. It sounds mechanical, doesn't it?

Thanks man!

I wouldn't be willing to bet the "boys" on it, but my guess is that the car is low on oil... or perhaps has a misfire. (didn't seem to shake all that much though)

Just changed the oil. Doesn't misfire. I'll change the gaskets and keep you posted.

I was thinking weak belt tensioner creating a "flappy" belt noise perhaps.
