Our long-time Saturn has an intermittent hard shift that appears to be getting worse. It has 178,000 miles on it, and we have owned it for almost 9 years. Once in a while we would get a hard shift, but now it is doing it more frequently. It also has a delay to engage in reverse that didn't used to be there as well. It has an automatic transmission.
I took it to the local transmission shop and and they said it does t have 4th gear or lock-up and the tranny would have to be pulled to fix whatever problem there is. I know the transmission oil is due to be replaced but I haven't done it yet since I didn't want to throw away money if it needs a major repair.
I don't mind tackling this myself, but am not sure where to start. Ay suggestions? I don't want to replace parts simply to replace parts, as that is my pet peeve in maintenance.
