Default 2007 ION loss of power steering?

Hi, I have a 2007 ION that has been a great car. It just hit the 45000 mile mark and now the power steering fails almost every other day. I have to stop the car shut off the ignition and start it up again then it goes for a day or so and fails? The dealer tells me it will be $1000.00 without even looking under the hood? Is this a regular problem with the ION? What's Up?:

Electric Power Steering..............and all the inherent problems it may have. You have what most naysayers against old school power steering with hydraulic pumps, hoses, leaks, etc., complain about as EPS is rearing its ugly head as electric power steering matures and specific issues appear to become sore points similar to hydraulic ps problems. Two different ways to lessen steering forces, two different problems with power steering. One is oil related, the other electric.

If you have a warranty, get thee to the dealer asap.

I have a 2006 Ion, took it in for a few minor things just before the warranty lapsed. When I picked it up, they told me they "had" to replace the PS. I hadn't noticed any problems. The mechanic told me he routinely moves the wheel back and forth on test drives to listen for a noise. He said he heard it, and that it indicates the gears in the PS unit are worn out. He also mentioned the $1,000 price tag....

if it was under warranty, it would not have cost you $1000

My '06 Ion just did this yesterday! I've been looking online to see if any other Saturn owner has had the same problem. I have 57,000+ miles on it and this is the first time it's happened. Any resolution to your problem?

I had a bad voltage regulator (in the alternator) that caused an intermittent power steering failure on my 07 Redline Ion. Make sure your electrical sytem is holding a steady ~13.8 volts.

I would also check the condition of the underhood inline power steering fuse connections.

Most likely needs the steering column with motor replaced. they tend to overheat and shut down. If it has a code c0475 then Thats your problem. hope you have extended warrenty
