Default Broken Drive Shaft???

Just curious, has anyone on here had a passenger side drive shaft break? Not the CV joint, the shaft itself right between the CV joints.

I loaned my 2002 SL2 5 speed (130,000 miles) to my (responsible) 16 year old, because his '96 SL1, Auto (196, 000 miles) had a flat tire and his girl friend was waiting. Not 5 minutes after he left, he called and said the car wouldn't move. Now, he is not the most experienced with a 5-speed, and he jerks it occasionally. But, even with massive jerking, I can't see how the shaft could have broken. It's OEM solid steel (or cast metal of some kind), and a half inch thick. At the point it broke, it was a narrower section of the shaft, with some sort of balancer/rubber sleeve thing clamped to the shaft. It looked a little rusty under the sleeve. The replacement did not have the balancer thing, and was the same diameter end to end.

After replacing the shaft, everything works as well as ever, so it does not look like anything else was damaged. What do you think, defective casting, or abusive driver?

They break all the time when 16 year-olds hit curbs at 60 mph! I have a teen driver too; I know what they are do.

I have been a teen driver and have raised a teen driver, you will never know exactly what happened. That said, my 98 sl2 broke the same axle in the same spot while I was driving. It had 230,000 miles at the time, cheap easy fix.
