And since when do Monster Trucks get over 18 mpg???
![]() ![]() Yeah.. a Monster Truck probably gets, what? Probably something like 3 mpg? If that.... Obviously someone in Oklahoma at a dealership was extremely desperate considering that NO Saturns from the 1991-2002 model year were even ON the list of selected vehicles that get LESS than 18 MPG. Pure example of how people will do anything for money...even if it means breaking the rules of the government. Makes me wonder how many other dealerships have taken in any S-Series....

Hahahaha, quite amusing; I'm only wondering which dealership around here did that. It definately beats seizing up the engines, at least this way you get a lot of amusment out of the vehicle's destruction.
As far as the monster truck's mpg, it's a moot point; you can say the exact same about F1 cars, funny cars, top fuel dragsters, and supercars. These vehicles are purpose built entertainment/performance vehicles (or high priced toys), our 'normal' cars are far more numerous than these machines, so getting their mpg higher wouldn't do much in the big picture; plus, it makes good PR for the Raminator.

Those cars were not necessarily clunkers. The dealer could have just picked up junk cars that were not worth much in the salvage yard to put on the event. The minivan was a clunker though, it met the criteria at least.
It doesn't make financial sense to destroy "clunkers" because from the time a vehicle owner signs over his car a 180 day timer starts. The engine has to be put out of commission using a silicate solution that hardens at high temperatures and the car goes to a scrapyard. From the scrapyard, it can be parted out and sold in pieces, except that the engine and drive train may not be sold. I've read articles that estimate a salvage yard earns about 60% of its parts revenue from engines and other components destroyed by the program. While that leaves the car with a lower value it can still be sold for body panels etc. Also, if anyone here is looking to take advantage of the clunker program. It is perfectly legal to remove parts from the vehicle and trade it in. There are certain parts you can't remove, such as driver's seat etc, or any part necessary to operate the vehicle. Otherwise, nothing prevents an owner from stripping a car of non required parts before trading it in under the program (body panels, rims, interior pieces, replacing wheels with cheapies). The vehicle must be driveable, be continuously insured and registered to the same owner for at least a year. Even cars with ex-salvage titles are eligible!

non of the s series qualified. they could not have gotten that saturn from a cash 4 clunkers deal because you cant lie on the government files, plus they need a VIN of an actual clunker vehicle. more than likely that was stock footage they showed from FAUX NEWS, otherwise that dealership broke some major laws (although how I do not know)

I've been surprised to see (on Craigslist) that 1997 SL2's are listing for slightly more, on average, than they were when I bought mine 4 years ago. I've been seeing *more* S cars in the last couple years, I honestly think people are relying on them more.
Clunker? I think not. If/when gas gets up to $5 a gallon, i.e. if Saudi Arabia's Ghawar field starts to give out, they'll be even more sought after. |

OK, so the dealer added a Saturn so the monster truck had something to play with...
Anyone want to comment on the LACK OF RESPECT we're getting? |

There is something else on "respect"...
(If this needs to be moved to another thread, you may...) Car & Driver's most recent issue- the 2010 new car issue... they say they covered every vehicle and manufacturer for 2010. Not quite. Saturn was not mentioned. At all. Anywhere. ANYWHERE in the mag. Even the soon-to-be-departed Pontiac got a mention. Dunno about you, but I'm feeling insulted. |
