Default Exhaust advice

Yesterday I went to replace the gasket between the Cat. and the resignator and discovered the used dealer the previous owner bought it from welded the studs and nuts on. It looks like I will have to weld new flanges on both pipes as the old ones are completely messed up but the rest of the exhaust is in mint shape. So my question is what is the best way to remove the down pipe from the header so I can weld it up on the bench last time I tried on a firefly I snaped the studs .
