I know our owner's manual recommends the low-grade gas, but would it hurt to use the middle grade? I've noticed less engine noise at WOT when using it.

Not sure about the ION, but I find with my SL2, when the temperatures are very warm (above 85 or so), I do get abit better performance with mid grade. Just my 2 cents worth!!!!

I guess it doesntt really matter if you're really at WOT that often.....engine will break & throw all the carbon off the internals after too much abuse.

Actually, when I used mid grade (89) in my SL1, I got crappier gas mileage. I didn't full throttle it that often, but when I did it would be worse yet. I haven't tried a tank of 89 in my Ion yet. I am not sure how it will work. I have been having good gas mileage with 87. I think that is what I am going to stick with.
