Default Interchangeable Parts?

I need to put a new rack and pinion on my right hand drive 1999 Saturn SW1. I was given the part number by a dealership but the part is discontinued. They recommended I check aftermarket parts. Auto Zone has the part but can't tell me if it is only for left hand drive, only for right hand drive or if it will fit both. Does the same rack ad pinion part fit both right hand and left hand drive? Or is there a specific part for right hand drive only?

Pretty sure the postal version is different from the left hand drive.

You probably are going to do a fair bit of searching.

You might try junkyards in countries where they drive on the left.

Good luck..

Check here:

You will get the info you are looking for. And check on Amazon as several sources list there as well.

Can yours be rebuilt?

Is it something where it just needs new seals?

You may want to check www.saturnautosalvage.com in Kansas

They only specialize in Saturn S-Series cars. I have bought from them before, they may have parts for the SWP as well.

Worse case, you could remove the rack and have someone rebuild what you give them.

No one actually rebuilds them. You find good ones in the JY as it is cheaper. The RHD rack is available from the links I posted.

^^ Old Nuc, your first source link (Detroit Axle) only differentiates the '99s as SW1/SW2, but not SWP. So were the RHD models all SW1's?

The second choice does say they rebuild a customer's rack.

RHD wagons were SW1's with the driver sitting on the wrong side of the car, which probably led to a unique steering rack and funky brake pedal setup that they didn't feel like replicating for the clutch so SWP's were only automatics (not sure if all RHD's were auto-only but probably)

Based on photos I've seen online they didn't feel like making a new gear selector with the button on the right so they just used the one from a manual that had no button

One thing in favor of having Turn One rebuild your steering is that your system uses the part of a rack gear like no other. You could request that a flipped-over rack gear from a LHDrive be substituted for your well-worn rack gear. You might even have such luck with the pinion gear. The people at Turn One would sure be the ones to know.

Iíd guess that parts that take a pounding on these Rack & Pinions are the bushings that guide the rack gear. I imagine a postal wagon driven on wash-boarded dirt roads would be tough on bushings. If the bushings have slop in them, the gear teeth would fret more than usual.
