Default Wont stop Chiming

Hi im new to the forums and i just have a few questions about my 1992 Saturn SL1, i was wondering if any of you could help me.

The problem is with my ignition, whenever i turn the car off and open the door, the car chimes like my keys are still in the ignition and it stops when i shut the door. I had a solve for this problem, I took the fuse out for the chime, but i soon realised that by doing that, it stopped my radio from working also, so i had to put it back in. Another problem i have with my ignition, is the key becomes stuck in the ignition sometimes too, and the only way to get it out, is to shift into any other gear but park. Is there anything i can do to help this without buying another starter?

Thanks in advance Nick

Welcome to the Board.

Problem one: 90% change of a bad ignition switch.

Problem two: The key sticking may be a worn key, worn ignition cylinder, lack of lube in the ignition cylinder, park position cable misadjustment.
Try lube and new key as the first cheapest steps.

As for buying a new starter????? Where did that come from? Continuous chime and sticky key to replacing the starter?

I think they meant starter as in improperly calling the ignition cylinder a "starter." So, the sticky key might be solved by a new one from the dealer cut according to your VIN, not, just a copy of a worn key, and the dinging, can't be helped without a new ignition cylinder. My '92 SC did it for years, and still does, no other problems have come from it.

Did you ever try to replace the ignition switch? Any cars that I have had for this problem have been fixed by replacing the switch. Not saying that a problem in the ignition cylinder may not cause the problem through the switch but the electricals are in the switch not the cylinder.

Sounds to me like it's the ignition LOCK, not the switch. First options:
* Lube it - put some lock lubricant (or even, gasp!, WD40) on the key, and insert and remove several times.
* A new key - if your old key is worn, it can cause the ignition lock to act up. If so, DON'T get a key "copied" from your existing key. Get a new key cut by the dealer, based on the key ID associated with your car's VIN.

Oh, I meant ignition switch. I know that wouldhave fixed it, I bought it from a my good buddy, he's a Saturn tech. He never fixed it while he had it, and now my other good buddy has it, and it still ain't gonna get fixed.

That's true of the electricals related to the ignition system itself (ACC, RUN and START positions), but there must be something in the cylinder itself that "senses" that the key is in it (even in the OFF position), and ties to the chime module. That's what's malfunctioning in this case. Think of it this way - if you just slide the key in and back out again, you just hear the pins in the cylinder and the key sliding through it. But if you insert the key, turn it, then turn it back, when you remove it you hear (and sorta feel) a more definite "click" as you pull the key out. That's the actual mechanism that locks the column, BTW, and I always presumed that it was also what ties to the chime module.

Nick, is your steering column lock working? I bet it's not, and therefore I'd say there's a mechanical problem with the cylinder not locking the column when you remove the key, and thus the chime module thinks the key is still in.

You could always just disconnect the switch that indicates whether the door is open/closed. Pry it gently out and remove the connector and the door will always read "closed". I did this so I could listen to the car radio with the door open and engine off. The downside is that I locked my keys in once. D'oh

How about just disconnecting the chime? My duaghter care does same thing sometimes and I am pretty sure it is in switch. I have not bothered to locate chime yet though. It appears/sounds to be in center counsel.

There's a chime module (about the size of a deck of cards) that controls it. It's on the back of the interior fuse panel, I'm quite sure. If you disconnect it, you lose things like interior lights, and something else, I forget. You can remove the chime component from the module, but you need to replace it with the proper resistor, in order for it to still work.

The chime module also controls the rear defogger.

Likewise, disabling the door switch also disables its control of the dome light, which, in some places, is a personal safety issue. These are nothing but symptom suppression, which don't get to the root cause.

I will pull up a wiring diagram and figure out how to kill the chime and nothing else. Even if several functions are in that module it should not be hard to remove one of those fuctions by either external control (sense wire) or internal mod.

That fixed my chime problem. Fortunately, it was fixed under extended warranty. Otherwise it would've cost $286.36 at my local Saturn dealership to replace the ignition switch.

The '96 FSM describes an "Ignition switch kry minder" separately in the diagram, but using the same connector face as the rest of the ignition switch. Circuit wire 80, a light green wire, goes from pin D of that connector to pin D5 of the IPJB connector (where it ultimately enters the chime module. It feeds an SPST switch that goes to ground. My guess is that switch is stuck closed. If a key lube and a fresh key fail, and you're into a quick fix that won't have any other functional repercussions, you could try cutting that wire and taping over the end that goes to the IPJB. Another option - according to the diagram, the ground wire (black) that goes to pin E of the ignition switch connector appears to serve ONLY the key minder switch, so you might try cutting that wire instead.

Had this same experience several years ago - there is a contactor in the ignition lock that senses whether the key is in or not. They stick and it is likely an accumulation of crud. I cleaned the lock cylinder out with some electrical contact cleaner and re-lubed it once the chime switch was no longer sticking.

Again that was several years ago and the annoyance has not recurred.

For what it is worth.
