2006 ION Red Line
Default Bought a 2nd SL

Just picked up a 94 SL1 today. It was listed on ebay, but we went to see it, and the guy was willing to sell it to us right there in cash. Paid $500. Here is the ebay listing.

It definitely needs a bit of TLC, but hoping it won't be too bad. First thing is a valve cover gasket as it is leaking rather badly.

I see on another thread your first (and "good") satty got whacked... got any plans to combine 'em, or to drive this one until you fix the other, etc?

Whoa. Look at the engine. Can you say Simple Green cleaner?

Nice for the money, though. And it's a manual. Excellent!

Looks decent for the price.Shame about the drivers seat, those seats last forever if you take care of 'em.
Those older single cams go forever.Mine's got about 164k now.
Looks like you might have scored a decent stereo too!
Congrats!

No plans on combining them. The good sl2 only needs a lower fender piece and some buffing it looks like. The SL1 is for the gf. Might do some small mods to it for my own enjoyment, but she will be the main driver.

Just went out to look at it, and the thing is pouring oil. It looks like someones botched the timing job as well as the valve cover. I guess I'm going to redo the whole job, and get it to seal this time. Once that is all done we will definitely degrease the engine. I think I may replace both front seats with some seats from an sl2 at the local junkyard. As for the stereo, it's an Alpine cd 7893, and it has 2 sets of Boston Accoustics speakers as well.

Default Some pics major leakage

Here are a few pics of the car. Note all this oil leaked onto the ground in the last 20 or so hours since it was first parked there.

Look like old owner didnt put timing chain cover gasket on it and could been those orange silicone not complete sealing causing a huge oil messing leaks. By the way how many miles on that car ?

It has 196k on it. Debating now whether or not I'm going to reseal the motor in it, or look for a cheap 94 sohc with less miles.

Be careful, this one could turn into a real money pit. It's tough finding problems on used cars many times.I never knew my $271 Precat was breaking up until a month after, nor that the ERG valve was going bad.
Used cars are a good bet,but always expect to have to fix at least something...

Ahhh... a car that needs work... I'm starting to drool...

The timing chain/cover is really not that hard a job, see the tech tips for a complete rundown.

Nice thing is, if all it needs is a reseal, then $50 worth of Valve cover gasket/Saturn Silicone will do the trick. I have never had one come back leaking when resealed with the proper materials.

I have a question for you Applefool, how much is this car costing to insure? And how much liability insurance do you carry for the price you pay if you don't mind my asking.

Looks like that "pure orange oil" didn't cut the mustard here!! HAHA!

Nice score on that car, but I would have only paid $250 considering the botched jobs. I've seen Saturns on e-Bay go for $500 that were in much nicer shape than this.

good luck!

Luckily I can do the labor myself, so when I saw the botched jobs I was okay with it. Also with the prices im seeing on sohc engines, I'm considering just going with a new engine now. I saw a sohc with 400 miles on ebay for $200.

As for insurance I am just doing the quote on that now. Looks like $411 for the gf for liability only insurance for a 6 month policy.

After about 8 hours of work and trips to the part store, the SL1 is running well and not leaking any oil.

There were some pin holes in the oil pan next to each other that I JB welded until I can get another oil pan. Redid the valve cover gasket and got that sealed up. Cleaned and adjusted the rear drums, and redid the front brakes which were new, but had frozen sliders on both sides. Redid the whole pcv system, as the pcv tube was sealed shut and causing a lot of crank case pressure, which was forcing oil into the TBI. Changed the air filter which was dirtier than any I've ever seen. Finally, I did the vacuum injection style top engine cleaning which really smoothed things out. I'm pretty sure the rings aren't so hot, but she is still running like a top. It still needs, a radiator, a muffler, a top engine mount, driver mirror, and it could really use some new front seats. All in all, I spent about $25 today and 6 hours of time on it to make this $500 car purr like a kitten.

Cool!I'd love to hear and see more of this restore.
Please keep updating this thread and share some more scans of the good, the bad AND the ugly!
I put over $1k worth of stuff into my '97 after I bought it in Jan. to make it pefect in my eyes, but I'm very fanatic about that stuff.Heck,I even spent $50 from Saturn to replace the grey foam hood liner!ALL used cars need at least something fixed...
