Thumbs Up ION and Maxima

Is it just me or does the new maxima's rear have an uncanny resemblance to the ION sedan's?

Much has been made of the visual similarity. A few car magazines have suggested suing because of the like images. They think Nissan should be upset that econo-car Saturn stole their Maxima. They don't realize that one is a 2003, the other is a 2004. SATURN SHOULD SUE NISSAN FOR COPYCATTING!

Yeah, I do see the resemblance there. I did hear about the magazines noticing it too. I agree with THX, Copycatting is not cool!

There are some styling elements that are very similar. I like both cars. I am not yet a fan of the front of the Maxima though.

things i like about the maxima: the dual exhaust, and the cool sunroof...

things i don't like about it: the blatant ripping-off of the ION's profile shape; the similarity of the rear end, except that the maxima's tail light cluster is a rounded triangle and looks dumb compared to the ION's; the big, non-asthetic chunk of metal that the Nissan logo is sitting on top of on the grill...it is on basically all new nissans except the altima, and it looks like some 3-year-old built the car just because of that one thing; the total lack of a rear window—it's smaller than that of many sports cars, and this is a large mid-size sedan...the roof line goes down WAY too far in the back...

not to mention, i owned an ION 2 months before the first "sneak peak" pictures of the maxima were posted, and the ION had been shown in car shows more than a year before the Maxima's design was unveiled even in part.

people complained about the shark fins on the ION, but suddenly it's cool on the maxima for some reason, even though they have a greater negative effect on visibility. Oh, and not to mention they are using WAY too much HP for a FWD platform...buy the G35...

If Saturn sued Nissan, maybe they'd have enough money to expand their line-up even more!

BTW, wasn't the ION's debut in 2002?

We can look at it two ways, either be mad cuz the copying, or be glad, because if the Maxima becomes a huge success, it will only shed more light on a great car from Saturn that I think is totally undermarketed, or wrongly marketed, and if people like the Maxima, but are not in the price bracket, or insurance bracket to afford one, it might boost the ION's sales.
That would be a good thing.
You know what is really cool?
For the first time since the early 80's, we have a product that the foreign companies think is good enough worth copying, that speaks volumes about our engineers and stylists.
Thanks

Did you see the Road & Track blurb about how Chris Bangle stole the Ion's wheels and put them on one of the new BMWs? It was grand.

One of the teacher's at my school just got an '04 Maxima. The only way I'd buy one of those is if I got the Elite Package with the headed front & rear seats, heated steering wheel, power folding mirrors, rear console, etc. It really looks like a nice car when equiped like that!

Actually, I wrote a letter to Car and Driver about this very topic...and they printed it even though I made fun of them going all mushy about the cool tan on black interior in the Maxima, while they bashed the tan and black in the SL2....said it was cool and edgy in the Maxima and cheap and tacky in the Saturn.

There is the likely possibility that neither Nissan nor Saturn intended to look like they copied one another. The front of the ION sedan resembles a last-generation Nissan Sentra (only more 'edgy') and I have had many mistake mine for a last-generation Nissan Altima at first glance. So the Maxima has styling similarities to the ION; as far as I'm concerned that's great. I will give the Nissan this: the Maxima looks much more sleek than the ION.

PS. I do not yet like the front of the Maxima.

It was the night I purchased my silver blue ION2. It was parked one row over from a new Maxima, same color. I took me about one minute of jamming my key into the door lock of that poor Maxima before I saw the Nissan lettering on the car and realized my mistake. My 11 year-old son who was with me reassured me it was a natural mistake. That lessened my embarassment, but only slightly.

Default Nissan's lookalike.

The two most notable differences between the Ion and the Maxima are:

Saturn forgot to put a big chrome "hillbilly bucktooth" emblem on the front of the Ion, which is odd considering the Ion actually is made in Tennesee!!;

Also, Saturn went to the trouble to give the Ion an integrated Bumper and built in fin on the rearend. The Maxima looks like a Wax Model that backed up to close to the fireplace and all of its design elements just sort of drooped off!!!
