Default Saturn hating

I took my SL1 into my autotech class yesterday to do a tranny flush....and I swear I have never heard so many insults hurled at my poor car in such a short time.. Most of these were coming from the typical honda-driving kids (which explains a lot) but seirously, why do people enjoy hating on these cars so much?? My mom had one brand new in '98 and it ran FLAWLESSLY and my '01 has it's quirks but is still a good car given what I throw at is (80 miles a day, 7 days a week). IDK, but to me saturns are great cars.. just had to vent..

The most hate I've ever received was from a toyota salesman. i just told him i don't like to be ripped off by sleazes like him, and my car is only a few MPGs short of that Prius that he worked so hard to convince people to buy and my car isn't depleting the rare earth magnets for a couple extra miles per gal. It stemmed from him being mad because I changed my oil, tranny fluid, and spark plugs in less than an hour without any formal training.

Hate grows from jealousy...

I like japanese cars just as much as the next guy, but car choice is like religion. I believe what i believe for certain reasons. Just because the other guys has a different opinion doesn't make my opinion null and void. I never thought I would really like an American car, but this Saturn has turned out to be the most reliable car I know of over 5 years old. I plan to keep this car for the foreseeable future. I've come to love it.

Also, laugh at them when they have to do a timing belt replacement.

Roll Eyes Re: Saturn hating

Yes, that is true. I work with people who own everything from Audi to Prius to Tesla and everything in between.

I occasionally get very odd looks from people who know me and see me getting into my SC2 for the first time.

My Saturn gets me to work and back every day (78 miles round trip) and is fun to drive. Why would I want to put that many miles on a brand new car (such as our Cruze)?

And not to mention that it's easy to fix with the help of the great people on this fabulous forum (thanks again Charlie).

Honda and Toyota drivers in particular seem to forget that other cars do exist that will get you from home to work or the store more than 10 times without completely disintegrating.

I have heard all their repair stories. I don't see them as being any better (or worse) than about any other common marque.

But it's pretty hard to make a completely teen-acceptable ricer from a Saab or Saturn......

As for rare earth magnets and foamed nickel anodes, the French have come out with a pneumatic hybrid system. Brilliant. Seriously.

No magnets, no batteries, no super sensitive and high tech electronics, just air motors, tanks, valves and minimal controls.

Just wait, JC Whitney will offer a retrofit kit......

Happy people don't hate on anything/anyone. They are probably pissed because they have dents all over their cars and none on the Saturn.

I like to buy new, so my current Saturn is/was my last.

Lets go Mazda!

Cars to me are a personal preference on what i can afford and what my needs
for that vehicle are for. i factor in decent Looks, reliability, & price that i can
afford. i too have heard the odd comment thrown around here and there
and its usually from someone that has a newer vehicle that would like
seing me at there Level. i tell them Look my Saturn is Paid for is Yours?

as Long as My Saturn runs well and dont give me any headaches and dont
Leave me stranded anywhere i will keep it. When You drive a car thats able
to do that its Your best ride.

People will always insult something that is not part of the "norm". They know not of what Saturn really is, the advantages and disadvantages of the car, the purpose behind the car and the company, etc.

Do not take what they say to heart because they're ignorant. You know your car is a wonderful machine, as do the rest of us. Brush off those comments and show those fools a smile.

Your class sounds a little different from mine, since i'm a senior in a junior class, I bring my saturn in to work on it and clean it all the time, and am currently repairing and re-spraying both bumpers, everyone in the class has the typical ohhh its just a saturn..until they really look at it. Then they realize how much time and effort I put into taking car of the car and how nice it really can be if properly maintained. Also, kids my age think if it has shiny stuff on the engine, then it must be fast! I think they see my red ignition wires and OBX header and AEM intake and go wooooww that thing must be fast. Quicker than stock, yes. Fast in comparison to any other stock performance car, absolutely not. Most of the people I talk to that aren't extremely opinionated about car brands yet can actually be somewhat impressed it seems by the ideas behind the saturn (plastic panels and such) Everyone is always jealous of me when I work on it because it is SO simple compared to all the other cars we get in. Makes me never want to work on any other car because i'm so spoiled with my saturn's simplicity

You'll find many saturnfans that also own Porsches, BMWs, Mercedes, Audis, etc., and yes, Hondas, Mazdas, and Toyotas.

BTW... depending on where you live, you can just say, "Let's compare body rust"

Try driving a Prius around, although I will admit it's getting better now that they are so popular. When we got ours in 2007 there was quite a bit of Prius hating going on!
The best car we ever bought - knock wood - and has not even needed brakes yet with 98,000 plus miles on it and third set of tires. Just oil changes, cabin filter, tires.
I do think the little 12 volt battery in the back is getting weak and will need changing soon, but that's normal for a lead acid battery to age out. Main traction battery still going strong!
And watch out for large dogs!

Prius does eat tires. They are LRR and the compound could be better, the constant "chirp" when you nail the gas at stoplights takes its toll. The power from the electric motors is instant, you do not have to wait for the "torque curve" in a car with electric motors, it's there all the time.
I am NOT a hypermiler and mostly drive it like I stole it! Same with the Satty.

I love telling people that my SL can get over 40 mpg. AND it's been paid off for almost 16 years now. AND I can fix it. Especially new car dealers!

Typical conversation:

"No thanks, the new cars cost too much and are too complex"
"How about a nice used car then"
"Nah, I already have one, why would I buy another"

I don't normally downshift (or run a smoke machine with the engine running by accident), but when I do, it's next to a Prius, so I can let it know how much and how badly I'm destroying the enviornment..

and in a what goes around comes around sense, when vee-dub released their updated TDI (or perhaps people driving older TDIs and modding them for fuel economy like what we somewhat do here?) that could get like 50-60MPG, didn't all the Prius forums go in an uproar over it?

so what I guess you wouldn't be interested in a new/used pickup truck, van, or SUV...

and give it time, even the used market will have all the past complexities that you want to avoid now... (and in this regard my GM had one of those damned engine covers on it )
