Default I'm back, with a rattle I can't explain.

First, the car = 2001 SL2a 101,510 miles.

After the last oil change I noticed a rattle coming from the front passenger side of the car. I let it go thinking it was the mud splash shield being loose (since I changed the oil THAT way). Plus that side marker light is loose, so I thought it was shaking.

Well, I had some extra time today and I investigated it. Here's a video of it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXWRa65y4N4

I have been thoroughly over the top and underneath the engine and I'm 99.9% sure the sound is coming from the oil pan.

Symptoms: While running the AC it always rattles at idle, either in PARK or DRIVE. No AC it rattles sometimes at idle in PARK or DRIVE. When I'm driving, both with and without AC running it's not there. After driving and getting stopped at a light or stop sign it rattles, moreso with the AC on and sometimes with it off.

Now just today I was backing out of a parking space. Without the AC on it rattled a little BEFORE I put it in REVERSE. While in REVERSE it rattled the whole time. Stopping to put it in DRIVE - rattle - in DRIVE and BEFORE I accelerate - rattle - accelerating = no rattle.

So, please watch the video and give me your thoughts. I have not been on here in a while due to the SL2 running so good and no MAJOR repairs needed. Also, I don't know if Wolfman is still here but if he is I'd appreciate his input, or some of the other mech's input.

Thanks in advance, Paul

No time to watch the video, but from the description, it sounds exactly like the classic belt tensioner rattle. Induce the rattle, and watch the tensioner--you'll probably see it shaking in tune with the noise. Usually the answer is a shorter belt--two different sizes are available: 780 and 778. You need the 778 belt. If you already have it, you probably need a new tensioner (preferably OE). The noise is often worse under load (a/c on, and the car in drive, if it's an automatic). It may be better under high-idle (when cold).

And the winner IS: PlasticCarsRock!!! I watched the tensioner and sure enough, it moved in time to the rattle.

CONGRATS!!!!

And A BIG THANKS to you. This is my daughters car and I thought I was going to have to ditch it......Thank God...

Thanks again, Paul
